"Finished" my RX-7
Well guys, been about 4 years with 3 RX-7's, all first generation (I am too poor for a third )
Finally got the dream first gen I wanted, with no engine. I took the rebuilt engine out of my 79 SA (one of the first 1000 to be imported!) and dropped it in my 82. Months went by of getting parts for it/tuning it/frustrations.It all started when I decided to rebuild my old Nikki carburetor. Got it all put back together and the Idle loved being around 2ooo RPM. A few weeks went by and I got tired of it, so I went out to buy another carburetor... which means a new manifold. Got all that put together, and find out the stock exhaust will not let me mount my new carb! Got to get a header... then one thing lead to another leading to another leading to another... and this is what I ended up with!
1982 Mazda RX7 GS
1146cc Two Rotor Rotary engine (12a)
5 Speed manual Transmission
BMW Silver Titanium Metallic Paint
Removable Sunroof
Upgrades:
Carter Fuel Pump
New 3/8ths Fuel lines
Two Fuel Filters
Holly Fuel Pressure Regulator
Redline Fuel Pressure Gauge
OER 45mm Two Barrel Sidedraft Carburetor
Ported/Polished Side Draft Carburetor
OMP removed and running Premix
RacingBeat Street Header
Borla ProXS Presilencer
2.25" Custom exhaust
Mazdaspeed Protege Muffler
Polyurethane Bushings all around
New Radiator
New/more powerful Alternator
MSD Blaster2 Coils
Brembo Blank Rotors
Hawk HPS Pads
Rebuilt Front Calipers
Racing Brake Coolers w/ Ducting
Respeed 1" Front Lifting Block
Royal Purple Oil/Tranny Fluid/Rear end/Purple Ice
Front Strut Tower Bar
JVC Headunit
Rear Seats
A Pillar Dual Gauge Pod
Autometer Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge
Autometer Electrical Oil Temperature Gauge
Mods I have laying around that are going to be installed:
LSD Rear end
Rebuilt Rear Disc Brakes
Hawk HPS pads
Suspension Technique 1" Drop Springs
Tokico Illumina Shocks
Rear Strut Tower Bar
Front and Rear RacingBeat Sway Bars
Exhaust Cut-Out
I would have already had those on, but I am going to a RX meet in Georgia to pick up a driveshaft for the LSD rear. My plans on this car is to see Autocrossing and occasional Track days.
(Shh... I have a S4 Turbo laying around the house... Ready for boost?)
Picture time!

Well, the MSP muffler was a great fit, except for the wheel arch part. If it was about 3 inches taller it would make it over the rear end. I had an exhaust shop leave about 6 inches of exhaust (behind the muffler) on it. That left enough where it would bend up towards the rear end, and he welded 2.25" from there to the Borla ProXS. Other than that and a few hangers, piece of pie. I would reccomend it not being flush with the exhaust port on the rear bumper, as you will get black haze all over the rear, not to mention a fire hazard (if you shoot flames like me)
