You and your friend are wrong.
The Canadian SE model was nothing more than a base model car with the sun roof and rear spoiler from the GT... All Canadian 1990-94 Base, DX AWD, SE, LX, and S (1995 carry-over) models had SOHC 16-valve 1.8L motor. The 1990-91 & 1993 GT model had the DOHC 16-valve motor - shared with Ford for the 1991-96 Ford Escort GT, the 1993? Ford Escort LXE, and the 1991-96 Mercury Tracer LTS.
Many people, some on this list, mistake the 16-valve to mean DOHC...as very few Japanese cars are 16-valvers with a single cam...it seems to be ingrained in the psyche that they're automatically a DOHC. I had an interesting conversation wtih Gixxer at this thread http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...=&threadid=781 about this very subject...verified by him at the bottom when he finally opened the hood.
