Question about to install protege engine in my 323

Hello everyone

I have a Mazda 323 1990 and I'm about to change the engine in my car (it is a stick shift, 8 valves 82 hp by now maybe less) with 300,000 miles on it, great little car. The power is not there any more... Inspired by the GT-X and GT-R s models in other countries I started wondering if I could fit a protege 1.8 Liter Twin cam under my hood. I red that somebody dit it and I was wondering if somebody could assist me in doing the same thing. I need to know what I need to modify in order to fit this engine in my 323. Do I need to replace the transaxle too? Intake manifold, Exhaust manifold? ECU? etc....

I thank you all in advance

Manuel

I tought that the b6t engines were for the 323 89 and under, I think that I forgot to mention that I live in Los Angeles Ca and we don't see many of those turbos around here and none exist from 1990 to 1994, GT-X or GT-R's I wish !!!
I was thinking of replacing the transmission anyways 'cause the one I got is making noise. I am also guessing that the gear ratio is diferent too. I got one of the axles bad already so would be a good time to replace both. I don't know I'm still doing some research, I really thank you for your ideas.

I let you know what I'll do, I'm going to take some pictures too of the work that I'll be doing.

I just found some info on how to swap the engine !!!!
This guy did it him self and It looks like he got some advise from corksport, this is what he did...

First of all u need to have a manual for the car so that u have a pretty good idea of the workings of the car, I got a CHILTON'S manual from Baxter auto parts. Next here is the # of Derrick @ Corksport so if you need to get info on the spot we can be of assistance: Derrick- (503) 735-9858 Here r the necessities to get the job done: Metric sockets Torque wrench Motor ECU (the one that goes with the new engine) Engine Hoist w/ load positioner Steps: This is the way I did it you can do it however you r comfortable

1) Take out the battery and disconnect the intake system and remove it.
2) Start to disconnect as many of the electric's such as the injectors heat and o2 sensors, alternator, any ground wires, distributor, gear select, starter as you can and try not to clutter them on the floor, collect all bolts in baggies and label them where they came from. When u get to the fuel lines use surgical clamp scissors to stop them from leaking.
3) Now disconnect the vacuum lines and LEAVE THEM ON THE BODY OF THE CAR!
4) Now u should drain all the oil from the pan and all the coolant from the radiator.
5) Take the radiator out so you have room
6) Next disconnect the exhaust manifold from your engine and the intake manifold (intake=optional) (OVER)
7) Next u should be able to get under the car and disconnect the drive axles from the transmission, if u r going to keep the same tranny in, then u might want to drain that too while you are down there to save some time later.
8) Now take off the engine mounts and double check that every thing is disconnected that might link the engine to the car. You are now ready to take out the engine, so put the hoist hooks on the lift points and yank it out!
9) Once the engine is out you can now swap the tranny from the stock engine and put it on the new or if your swapping out both then go to next step. If not, it is easy to swap the tranny to the new engine.
10) When tranny and new engine are ready then go ahead and hoist the new on back in the car, (this step is where it is vital to get help so that u can position it right and line up the mounts correctly )
11) Once in the engine bay and lined up now u put the mount screws back on and reconnect the drive axles.
12) From here u should be able to just follow the steps putting it in as u did taking it out. Here is the part that u need to do to complete the swap. Since the old SOHC did not have an extra purge valve the wiring harness on the SOHC has six prongs that come from the ECU. The Protégé has a receiving harness of eight prongs. Here is where u will need to take off the injector wires from the protégé engine and put on the wires from the SOHC engine so every thing works out. I hope this works for u and u have as much fun is I do racing around the streets! Warning/Disclaimer. This information is not guaranteed to be complete or accurate.
