a throw out bearing is only like a 20-40$ part but if your gonna go through the trouble of replacing it get a whole new clutch kit it will come with a high performance throw out bearing, clutch disk, and pressure plate. Centerforce and ACT make good clutches or you could just buy an OEM clutch kit for about $130

yah.........i use a jack to hold up the engine, and a hoist for the trans-axle(so you can lower it out of the car).
its not realy that hard. takes about a day. as long as you have the chiltons or haynes manual your set.
and go ahead and get a set of ball-joints, youl probably have to trash the old ones to get them of.

In your initial description of the problem didn't you say "the clutch slips though"? Definitely replace the clutch assembly and the throw-out bearing. Slippage may be due to a broken clutch pressure plate spring - springs don't go for being flooded with water - they start a little rust and then fracture.
Tranny will come out the bottom while the engine stays in place. Do as advised above and follow the procedure in a manual. Only problem I had (changing the tranny) was the CV joints wouldn't come out of the tranny housing. If you run into this, you have 2 options -1)Unbolt the outer CV joint and remove it from the steering knuckle assembly (use a brass hammer to save the threads on the drive shaft) or 2) disassemble the inner or outer CV joint and reassemble later (will need new CV joint clamps). Either way, the lower A-arms need to be unbolted from the steering knuckle (easy). If the engine flywheel has surface cracks or signs of overheating, get it resurfaced at a local auto machine shop. You may need to add shim(s) between the flywheel and crankshaft depending on how much material they take off (puts the flywheel back into the proper position so the clutch works like it is supposed to).
