fuel management questions

hey everyone. i have a 94 protege dx, and have posted before. i recently finished a rebuild on another sohc bp engine, and dropped it in my car. it's running great. if u wanna check out the rebuild, go here: www.eden.rutgers.edu/~gbutler

anyway, i ended up not putting any performance parts into it. now that it's done and running, i was considering a turbocharger again. now, stop reading here if you're gonna tell me to get a gtx motor, cause i don't want to. i just spent money and time rebuilding this engine, and don't wanna get rid of it. i'm not concerned about the mechanics of it, i.e., manifold, piping, whatever, cause i have access to metalworking tools, and can make whatever.

it's the management that scares me off each time i consider a turbo. now, a friend of mine has Maximum Boost, its like the bible of turbocharging. i was flipping through it, and IIRC, he said that if you're running a relatively low amout of boost, like under 10 psi, you can get away with just a bigger fuel pump and regulator. is this true? if so, how will it run? (this is my daily driver.) i don't wanna spend my life savings on a haltech! also, i have heard about lx owners sending their ecu's out to be reprogrammed, costs like 500. i would spend that, plus i have a spare ecu, so time is no issue. could this be done with the dx computer? or what about a gtx ecu, is the wiring feasible with a dx harness?

also, are there any other management options i'm missing? i've heard piggyback's don't work well with our ecu's.

thanks everyone, i appreciate your help.

I am having my turbo put on my lx by a performance shop and I am getting a rising rate fpr and a feul pump to control the fuel. My
t-25 will be running at 8-10 psi.

not to many have sohc turbo Id love to haer how it turns out.
keep some updates on the project.

Ok, I own a 94 mazda protege dx and I use to have a turbo on my SOHC engine now I have a DOHC kia engine but the car was running real great up to 10 psi of boost just with a fuel presure regulator,DOHC injectors and the ignition timing retarded. Also you can install the ecu from Mazda 90-94 DOHC, 91-96 Escort Gt part number BP09 with your stock harness only you are going to have the ck engine light on but the car is going to run real good. any question my Email is mazdohc@yahoo.com. if you whant more info for more mod`s. on your SOHC.

mazdprotege94,

so did you run it at all with the sohc ecu? also, when you were running the fpr (was it an fmu?), did you run rich? also, did you upgrade the clutch?

i know when people do turbo's they generally upgrade the clutch and upgrade the exhaust, but in my case i wanna run a quick-spooling turbo like the rhb5 and only run like 8-9 psi. so are these extra upgrades necessary?

thanks everyone

yeah, that seems to be a pretty reliable setup, the fmu, pump, injectors, and the afc. and i would gladly pay for an afc, however, i don't think they work with our cars at WOT, i've been doing a lot of reading lately on this, but no one's said that it will work with our ecu.

anyone running a s-afc on a protege and have it working properly????? let me know.

What size injectors are on the 1.8L DOHC ?
At what load are they running ?
How much does the fuel pump push ?
How much play do you have with a stock 1.8L and a FPR ?

And how about the same info for the GTX and the GTR ?

Ohhhh please don't let the "Search Police" find this thread

Well i have the SAFC on my car now(its not turboed now, but will be.) You are correct, at WOT the ECU overrides the safc and does its own thing. Many have said that the safc is good for tuning the lower part of the power band, and then a RRFPR will take over the higher part. If you are running the SAFC, you gotta have an auto TPS from an escort gt, a protege LX or a tracer lts, or lxe. On mine now, it reading 100% all the time until you reach WOT and it reads 0%. So just got the auto TPS and it will work up to WOT. I belive you want to tap the green-blue???(dont quote me on that) off the TPS for the signal to safc.
