Haltech
Hi,new here i just got my protoge its a 92DX with a wonderful 105000 miles, its supposed to be a "punishment" car because i wrecked my old one..a 96 I30. honestly i love this protoge. its old. but i still love it. and i have plans for it. been searching on my own for info n things and stumbled across here..and think i can get lotsa help off of here
1)need new ECU when u get a BPT engine, so ive heard. local suggested Haltech, as did a website...anyone got feedback on haltech and which model to look for? As i understand it its stand alone and is completely programable for ignition/fuel/timing all that wonderful stuff and has extra controlls 4 electronic boost controllers and nitrous window switches and stuff.
2)also max hp handling the BPT is rated at? where can i get some good internals...pistons/rods/head/main studs/crankshaft?....not really in the near future just wondern..was planning on using the profec as a boost controller, thought id throw that in to see if any1 has opinons on it. is boost governed by an external wastegate or internal actuator? has an intercooler (front mount) ever been put on one of these? whats the factory boost level?
3)do the corksport engines come w/ the downpipe? can the existing downpipe b used? way i understand it everything after that can be left alone, just need the intake/exhaust manifolds and a downpipe. was specifically looking at a random tech or warpspeed cat and the mazdaspeed cat back.
4)will the u/d pulley work w/ the BPT, as i understand it the blocks are the same, i had a full nakamichi system in my i30 and intend to use it in my protoge, how badly will the u/d pulley effect it? and my alternator?
5)as 4 intake options for the BPT will any of the stuff like the rx7 VAF or bored out TB work? or is it more functional to just slap on a filter and leev it the way it is
6)as 4 suspension parts i have em picked out xcept for the rear and front strut bars, i know mazda speed makes a rear strut bar..do they make a front one? what about the GAB bars?
7) how much it generally cost to get the intake/exhaust manifolds ported/polished?
8)cams advisable on turbo? i always assumed messing with cams on forced induction is a bad idea but does anyone make cams tuned for the BPT?dont plan on raising the boost level any, not for now.
9)what options r available with the fuel system? i30 had a vortech hi flow pump/filter/injectors on it, this work fine with the mazda?
10)last but not least, ignition. plugs, wires, an MSD would fit in here good? yes? no?

Contact GROHALRM. He has a turbo engine for a protege (BPT). You might want that. it hasnt been installed so its just laying around. He has a spoiler and some other junk if you need it.

Most of the other stuff you need can be and/or is on Ebay right now.
if any questions

Wow, that's a lot of questions I wish I could answer some/any of them! My advice to you is get in contact with Braden, is his name on here Groharlem??? Sorry, I don't really know. Anyways, he's done this a couple of times and is probably the most knowledgeable on this type of swap and what needs to be done.
1. As I understand the Haltech is what braden was running, and he reccomends it. I don't know the exact model.
2. I'm not sure at the max HP. The GTR BPT ( opposed to the GTX BPT ) had a reinforced block and stuff, so it was beefier for more HP. A GTX BPT would still likely be able to put out A LOT with the proper components.
3, 4 No clue, sorry
5. Once again, I don't really know... But I know the RX7 MAF/VAF (whatever) is a common mod on a NA G1 pro. I'd assume it would be a good idea for the BPT... but I could be wrong.
6. The general consensus around here is that MazdaSpeed merchandise is horribly overpriced, even if it is a good product. If I were you, I'd just go with the corksport front and rear strut bars. I have a generic ( techracing ) front strut bar, and I love it, it's really nice.
That's all I can really even guess at answering... Sorry I couldn't be of much help. I'm sure Braden will poke his head in here when he sees the subject, he'll be able to help you out...
Braden's website is
http://blt.n3.net/ is probably has a link for e-mail or something on there. Good luck!
