newbie! sorry!
hey, well, these questions have probably been answered already, but i have to ask again, cuz i have no idea. i did search for previous threads and other info, but didn't find anything i really understood, sorry!
anyway, i'm going to be doing a lot of mods to my 94 dx soon, and i want to drop a "JDM MAZDA BP-T TURBO ENGINE
W/ AWD 5SPD TRANS" into it, but i have no idea where to start. i have a few questions that hopefully it wouldn't be too much of a problem to answer...
1. will it fit (engine)
2. what about the tranny? awd to fwd??? that doesn't sound right, but unfortunately, i don't know enough about cars in general to say y... would the 1.8l sohc tranny fit/work with that engine?
once again, i'm a newbie... what the hell is "JDM" and "BP-T"?
mainly what i'm wanting to know is is this possible? and if not, are there any alternatves?

It is a possible swap....JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market...they get better stuff over there....BP-T is an engine code..this was one of the highest HP 4cyl engines mazda ever made...180 hp stock...keep the tranny and just dont use the driveshaft and i beleive it's fine, as your DX's tranny is too weak to support this kind of power...you really need the ECU and harness also to make it work right..

Don't keep the tranny. LX trannies should be easy enough to find if you've got half a brain.
The SOHC tranny *can* work, but its kinda iffy.
The AWD tranny, if you try to use it, first off, the will probably be clearance problems since the AWD pros and the GTR/GTX have a different firewall, second, the tranny will fail soon since without a rear axle to send power to, all the power/torque will go through th front, and it wasn't designed for that.

dude you realize in the AWD setup the front wheels get like 80-90% of the power anyways...I dont think handling it all would be much of an issue, other wise you wouldnt be able to do any mods at all if you had the complete AWD setup for fear of breaking the tranny.

so an lx tranny will fit for sure tho, right?
i mean both sound like a good idea either way, however having a driveshaft not connected somewhere never sounds good, for function or looks, and plus i'd rather do this right the first time u know..?
also, i'll have to install carrier bearings and anything else i'd need from an lx, correct? i'm assuming that the dx and lx are similar enough to just swap put parts, correct me if i'm wrong...
just so i know what i'm getting myself into, is there anything else i should know before i start throwin wads of cash down on this? i know it's not gonna be fun, but i thing the end result will DEFINITELY be worth it.
oh, and thanks for the feedback, it really helped a lot!

That seems to me like it would defeat the purpose of AWD, I mean with that much torque going to the front you would still spin the tires (well lets assume a hard launch) but it would just be wasted energy.
I thought the torque split was more like 60/40 or 40/60
EDIT: Found this
http://protege4wd.vista.com/
After the change from the BF body style to the BG for the 1990 model year, Mazda no longer sold a turbocharged version in the U.S. Mazda continued to sell turbocharged 4WD versions of the 323 in other markets. The newer cars had a revised chassis and a 1.8 liter engine (with a power increase of about 35bhp), along with viscous-limited-slip center and rear differentials with a 57 percent rear torque bias.

k, well my last comment seems to have been almost completely ignored, lol. no biggie, the one thing i really need to know tho is (midnightblue97) a lx dohc tranny will definitely fit though, right?
oh, and eggynatey i can't do that! my protege's my baby, it may be ugly and slow at the moment, but... wait, y am i doing this again??? lol, nah, like i said before, i think it'll be worth it, plus no one here fixes up proteges, and hatchback civics are all too common here, i want something that no one's done before (here [san antonio, tx] at least!) and looks completely different... besides... i have my dx, no need to go buy another car... just more work and money for me to spend on 2 cars instead... d:P

Yes.the tranny will fit.
PLease do it now and use the LX tranny. The SOHC tranny will also bolt up, but its a limiting factor in the future. Might as well do it correct now,, rather than having to swap in a new one later on.
