Dude, you've got to be a lot more specific. It could be anything.
I mean, I've got a noise just like that in my 3rd gen and it WILL NOT go away--it's my wife.

heres the noise

it sounds like a drum beat" it starts of slow wehn my car is idleing and then goes faster when the rpms go up.. plus the oil pressure is way down and i have replaced the lifters cause thats what everyone said the sound was and we found metal shavings in the oil so we did an oil change and replaced the oil filter...

well from what ive experienced .... obviously it can be anything...but now as we narrow it down realistically......it could be anything from a hole in ur exhaust pipe to an unplugged air host...my friends jeep would make the exact sound u talked about for YEARS until a jeep guy up the street simply plugged a hose back in.....i know exactly what ur talking about now so....it cant be anything to bad but just pop the hood. rev it a bit and move ur head around until u can hear the area of where its coming from. check the hoses etc. what your probably hearing is the (tc- i think thats what there called) gases dispersing into the air instead of into your intake. the gasses im talking about come from the top/left or top/side of your valve cover and should be on the left side going into ur intake that says "injection" if thats disconnected then you solved the problem BUT, I could also be COMPLETELY WRONG like always.... so if its REALLY loud and u can tell it isnt as quick as it used to be then id just take it to a mechanic on a day where uve got nothing to do....it could just be a hose, simple as that.

it goes like.... putputputputput right? or almost like po-ta-to-po-ta-to ...... but not the good po-ta-to for u knuckleheads....if anyone gets that reference which i doubt anyone will. nothing like an underhead cam v-twin...unless its like...a v8

hey buddy my car is doing that too.. ever since last year.. havn't drove it much any more.. mine is a 99 protege. changed oil too and filter.... its a loud clanking noise that is off beat, it clanks and then it doesn't, then its back at it , am i right?

im on the verge of just ripping the motor out and tear it apart.... your oil pump (im sure) is about to go...

the lifters had nothing to do with it (in my case) the noise comes by your oil pan under the car on the side that your timing belt is... am i right with that also?

when i get my problem fixed i'll let you know what the problem was... it could be the same as mine

well i got my engine to the shop and my crankshaft got turned as far as it could but there were still groves in it so i am getting a new one and i have to get a new oil pump cause an internal part of the pump broke off and was clogging the pressure sender unit..well i pretty much tore the crap out of that engine but it should be done in about 3 weeks...
