Protege not starting?

Hey guys got a little problem, about to buy a 93 protege from my friend and the car has been running flawlessly for over a year now but just yesterday when we went to start it, it wouldnt turn over it just clicked. The battery and alternator are in fine shape. Changed the starter and still nothing??! What else could it be? Oh and another thing when we go to shift, the car will die? I'm clueless, any suggestions would be great thanks..

My protege has been doing weird **** similar lately. The other night it just cutt off...all I did was turn on my headlights. I had been suspecting my alternator was going bad because my battery would lose charge, so we changed that. After it was changed, it was hard to get the car started. We checked all the wires and everytihng, and charged the battery. Nothing. Then we just tapped the starter with a hammer and it fired up!

But about 20 minutes later, it would sputter and if I let it idle it would almost die. Any time you press the accelerator the car would start to die, unless you did it just right...It's pissing me off because we've changed the battery, starter, alternator, checked all wires, etc. It HAS to be something electrical, becuase when it started to sputter I couldn't turn mmy wipers on because they would barely move. Also, the clock was too dim to read. UGGHHH!!

Your battery may not have enough of a charge. It might have enough power to run the head unit and headlights, but not enough to turn the starter. I'm not sure about the car wanting to die when you shift, is it an auto?

I've had that clicking noise without starting from a bad ground (terminals not tight)... try that first, also making sure to clean off any residue.
