Questions from newbie

Hey guys. A quick background on me: I've had my Protege for about a year and a half and have managed not to do anything. Which my wife thinks is great. Well, it overheated about a month and a half ago and it put holes in the cylinder head. I manged to get a replacement. Which has BP01 on the exhaust side. Could anyone tell me any kind of specifics about it? Like valve size and maybe what year it is.

Another question is the difference between SOHC and DOHC. I have the SOHC which had 16 valves. Now, does the DOHC have the same amount or more? I was wondering if a swap would be worth it. The only thing I can think of as an advantage to the DOHC is the ability to tune the exhaust and intake separately. Which I don't think I have the need for.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Welcome!! I'm guessing your not taking your wife's rcommendation on modifying for performance...good man! you've come to the right place, but even if your not, We welcome you.

i could be wrong, but i don't think any dates are stamped on the head. The 1st gen Protege's are from 90-94, i guess that narrows it down somewhat...

Yes the DOHC has 16 valves.

as for the DOHC head swap, you'll also need the DOHC intake and exhaust manifolds and DOHC ECU.

Well, this is the first car I've owned that I haven't done anything too and it was the first one that broke really bad. So I'm thinking that not modding it is the reason for everything going wrong. Sounds good to me at least. I'm not looking to make a street monster out of it. I have another toy for that. I would just like a little more passing power and be able to get over a hill on my way to Arizona a little easier.

well with the dohc head, you will be able to safely rev to 7000 rpm, but the stock ecu wont allow that. if you swapped the ecu as well, you should gain 20hp and redline at 7000 rpm. i dunno how hard an ecu is to find, and how expensive it is, so it may not be worth it.
