Speedometer

When I first bought my car (91' Mazda Protege LX) my speedometer would sound a grinding noise when i first started it up (I was thinking since it was cold out - it would need to warm up) about 10 minutes of driving, it would stop. Thats been 4 months ago and never had that problem until the other day. This time - it started to grind when I was on the beltway and all of the sudden it was jumping from 60 mph to 136 mph then back to 50 mph then jump to 140 , and I was still only going about 60 (flow of traffic). It was about 90 degrees out (thinking last time it was acting up due to the coldness) ???

I just wondering why would that do that?!

Thanks in Advance -
Earl

wish i had an idea; but i've never had that happen.... sounds like it has to do with the speedo itself, but maybe it could be related to the speedo cable's connection to the tranny??
