weird sound around 3k revs
i don't know if this is something with my car or all proteges, but when the engine goes over 3k, it sounds like a turbo spooling up, and i know i don't have one. then when the revs drop back down below 3k, there is a rattling sound, and i have no clue what it is. it doesn't do it anywhere else in the rev range, only at 3k. any ideas?

There is a recall for this (I think this is your issue). Does it go away when the car warms up?
Here is info from Mazda:
Category: B Piston Engine
Repair Reference # 3562
Subject: 2.0L Engine noise with cold coolant temp
ALL 2.0L between 2001-2002 are affected
Customer may experience an engine rattle under light to moderate acceleration with engine coolant temps below 149 deg F and engine rpm's between 1500 to 2500.
Confirm noise only occurs within the VTCS ( Variable Tumble Control System) operation "valve closed" period (when ECT is below 149 deg F)
This noise is currently believed to be the result of the timing between VTCS plates "opening", and the ignition spark advanc command. This is an operating characteristic of this engine and no repair attempts should be made. Although the noise is present only during cold start up and disappears once the engine coolant reaches 149 degrees F, Mazda realizes that it is an annyance to some customers and its engineers are investigating possible countermeasures in an effort to address customer satisfaction.

I know the spooling sound you're talkin about. Both my 91 LX and my dads 91 LX do this. I don't know what causes it, but I can tell you that it's not from and mod you may have done because my 91 is modded and my dad's is stock but we both experiance this.

i get a nice spooling sound (94 lx) above 4,000 rpms noticeable inside the car and about 3,200 to 3,600 noticeable outside the car, it's wierd. now if i race my engine anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000, and let go of my gas petal, you can hear a little bit of a tumbling sound... is that what you're talking about? cause to tell you the truth, a heat shield rattle could occur at idle, but especially below 2,000 or 3,000 rpms. bottom line, if it's lose, it's lose. either than that, i couldn't help you, sorry.

my '92 DX also does this around 3k rpm's and is most noticable in the first 3 gears. it doesn't really annoy me as much as some of the others here because some people actually think my car is turbo because of it.

whether i'm driving or just revving the engine, if i bring the revs over 3k, i can hear it "spool". then when the revs drop back down, there is a whistle/rattle noise. it only does it from about 5k-3k, and then nothing. never a noise below 3k. i'm glad i'm not the only one hearing this though.
