Don't know but help
Ok, my car is on jackstands as I type. It makes a thumping noise as I go down the road. I gave it the shake test and it doesn't shake but maybe a 1/2 time after I jump off- so not the struts, right?? I look under it today and the boot under the spring (that covers the shocks i guess) is ripped and torn on one side. Could that be the problem?? It is the front left wheel. (Drivers side). Please help, first time mechanic here! Any and all suggestions would be nice. 3092519677, or rck2drums2@hotmail.com

I'm not sure, but check your tires. One of them may have a blister or a flat spot on the treads. Does it clunk on acceleration or decceleration? How about when turning a corner? You may also want to check your CV joint boots for tears. Let me know how you make out.

When exactly does the noise occour? When you're just driving? When there's a bump? When you're listening to the radio really loud during a bass-y song?
Saying "my car makes a thumping noise" does all of us absolutely no good. Thumping noises could be from a million different things. My car makes a thumping sound too, from the 6" subs I have in back. My old Bradley made a thumping sound because the one tire had a flat spot. My dad's old van made a thumping sound because the rear end was going bad.

To Pro2goWell this "THUMPING" noise is coming from the suspension. Why would I post it on the suspension forum if it was coming from my 12 inch woofers in the back?? Or my tire, at that. If I could better explain it, maybe I would. But I don't know what the hell it is. But don't worry about it man, someone else whos not quite of a ******* smartass can try their best. All I'm doin is trying to save some money, thats all. Thatnks everyone else for your suggestions.

I don't mean to be an *** hole but people like him make people like me sound stupid, ya know?? I'm pulling my car into the shop (speedlube, where i work) and looking underneath it with my buddy to see if we can't find out whats wrong with it. If we can't make a diagnosis, then I will take it to the garage and pay the money (when I have it). Thats my last option I suppose.

Sounds like struts, but get an educated opinion from someone you trust and who knows cars, before you plunk $$ where it's not needed.
On my car the struts were clunking over bumps, and when steering inputs were made they would sometimes make noise. The car felt really sloppy and loose when I would swerve left or right.
If you've never heard CV axles that are going bad, they will make clicking sounds on turns, and sometimes if they're in really bad shape, will click on a straightaway.
