Play in Strut Plates?

Play in Strut Plates?
I took my pro to a shop recently because of a minor issue with my steering. There is a kind of click/clank when I go over a certain point in the steering. It happens when turning the wheel in either direction, at any speed, including at a stop. Just to clarify, I will repeat an important piece of information: It is only when going over a CERTAIN point in the steering. It is only ONE clank, not a series. (this rules out CV axles...besides mine were just replaced) This is not intermittent.
The shop said that what they found was play in the struts or strut plates or something like that at a certain point, making the noise. I didn't get to show them in person what the problem was, so I'm not 100% sure that they knew what I was talking about, but I'm pretty sure. On the invoice from other repairs (done at the same time as inspection) they put at the bottom something like ...Recommend struts and strut plates... Does this make sense?
If so, is this something I could easily repair myself? I have had experience working on brakes, but haven't done anything with the suspension/steering before.
