alternator....

the other nite i was rockin to Bryan Adams and goin to the grocery store, when all the sudden the music went dead...i was like wtf, so i kept driving cause i thought something with my cd player messed up, then my headlights dimmed, and my "charge" light came on....

so i went home and i disconnected my foglights cause i thought they had been draining the battery, and then i let it run for a lil while to get the battery charged up. and then the light went off and i drove it around fine for awhile.

the next day it wouldnt start. so i jumped it and brought it to my uncles auto garage, and he put some electronic thing on it that said the alternator was pushing 12.4 amps or whatever it does, and it needs to be at a minimum of 12.8.

so my stepdad got a alternator out of an 92 pro when i was on my way home, and we spent 3 hours putting it in. then i charged the battery cause it hadnt been charged for a few days and was about dead.

but now when i start it up, the charge light will come on, and flash or stay steady, but i was driving it around and it seems fine, and it started this moring in the cold w/snow but the light keeps going on.

so could there be somethign wrong with my new alternator that i installed, or is there a fuse or 'trick' to get the light to shut off after the alternators been replaced?!

thanks

Maybe there's an electronic diagnostic plug you forgot to plug back in? Check and make sure everything's plugged back in. Just a guess

I dont know ive had to change my alternator about 5 times in the last 2-3 months cuz my amp has a short in it i think so im just gonna disconnect it. After a couple of times the alternator only takes about 15 min. to take out then another 15 to put the new one in. It's a hassle tho' but ive never had the problem with the charge light........you could try disconneting the postive battery terminal. Wait for 15 seconds the connect it back that might work.
It'll reset your clock and everything though.

You should check that the alternator terminals are reading between 14.1V to 14.7V while at idle, if thats ok then you should check the wiring harness to the battery.

when i had my altenator go up, it was just dirty but i had the same problem you did, when we put in the same one (after cleaning the contacts) we connected everything back up and accidently blew the black 80amp fuse under the hood but after that no light, i think you forgot to connect a wire back to its proper place, if not that i would say clean all of the plugs/wires that connect to the altenator since you just recently stired up all the dirt in that area, just a thought, hope u get it fixxed soon.

The other thing to check is that the voltage also stays somewhat steady with engine RPM. If the regulator fails it sometimes will provide the correct voltage when at idle, but a higher voltage when it is running faster.
