What can we do?

I see you didn't get your taxes in on time. Wow, you sound frustrated. I'll be honest, I'm pretty upset about this problem too. I've heard talk about the throttle body or something getting thrown around about this problem but don't know if that got to a cure. I doubt it, though. How can three dealerships tell me the same thing and not only that but a post on another site has a guy who was told by a Mazda dealership somewhere else in the country the same thing! It's as you say, it's GOT to be something. I think they just gave up on finding out what it is. What would be a crime is that someone out there found out what component in the car is defective and hasn't bothered to share it. When I turn the A/C on, the problem only gets worse.

Never mind I got it. That's a hidden solution. The problem is still there but can never manifest itself in a manual transmission car since every time you're approaching a stop or stop light, you have to put it in neutral. That's the same as me putting my AT in neutral as I approach a stop. It's just that in a MT, it doesn't look stupid. In an automatic it doesn't only look stupid, it IS stupid.

This may be a dumb question, but I know nothing about engine overhauls or Mazda procedures involving them. (Or whether or not Mazda slacks when doing them ) Perhaps Mazda used the same motor mounts when they installed the replacement engine? I would assume it's standard procedure to replace them (i could be wrong), but u never know what kind of lazy mood the techs may be in on any given day.

If this was the case, then your motor mounts could still be the problem!

Mike D did say that when he replaced the mounts it fixed his problem. But, he said that he has replaced them twice since he got his car, AND he said that he races. I don't race (although I have been thinking about giving it a try). That Protege is a 94, but I'm not sure how long Mike has had it himself. If the motor mounts will last me at least 2 years and will solve the problem, I'm going to be happy.

I have had all my transmission mounts recently replaced...(It says on the invoice "Front and Rear Transmission Mounts") I'm not sure exactly what mounts these are, but I'm assuming that includes the 4th motor mount...being the one mentioned by Mike D. I bought the three other mounts last night at AutoZone, the Front, Front Right, and Rear motor mounts. Are these all that I would need to replace since the "transmission mounts" have been replaced?

(Notice I'm still thoroughly confused as to which ones are motor mounts and which ones are transmission mounts, except the obvious ones like the one near the belts...)

its been like 2 days and no reply thats crap. write ppl!

I realized that even if what mannydingo said about the motor mounts just masking the vibes till they go bad, thats all good. The mounts I bought have a lifetime warranty I'll just replace them every 6 months if need be, LOL.

$200 down the drain, BLEGH!!! I replaced the motor mounts and it didn't do ANYTHING. The old ones were hardly even bad anyways...(as I noticed when I took them out). Wasting money sucks. I don't understand how, if they caused the problem, it didn't fix it when I replaced them...?

Unhappy PlutoPeoplz, I AM sorry to hear about that....

....and i hate to say this, but.....AFAIK and IMO, the 'bad vibes' are simply a result of the automatic tranny....i think i tried to say that in my 1st post; darkcide also said it:

simply put, at a STOP with the auto in Drive, the engine/tranny is TRYING to make the car go forward...but you have your foot on the brakes....that combo results in the 'vibes'...

On a larger displacement engine, V6 or V8, you don't get that shake; but small 4cyl automatics just do this...its the nature of the 'beast'

So, again sorry to hear your frustration....

And BTY, i don't think its 'uncool' to put the auto in Neutral when you are at a stop; in fact i would prob WANT to do this EVEN if it didn't shake!!!

I still maintain that there is something causing this problem. I have been in other automatics that didn't have this problem...including a 1.6 liter four. My mom's Accord doesn't do this...(although it is a 2.3 liter, a bit larger.) I refuse to accept no for an answer, because this is something that I can't live with. I will have to get rid of the car if I can't find a solution, and I don't want to do that...

Well it was over a year ago that I posted a reply. I wonder whatever happened to your Protege problem that I could never get resolved either. My protege trembling problems came to an end about a week and a half ago. An older gentleman(72 y/o) miscalculated and crashed into my 94 Protege. No more trembling problem!!! That's because the car got ruined to death in the crash. His insurance company has my check coming next week. I will definitely not buy a first generation Protege. However, I will still buy another generation Protege. Both first generation Proteges I owned were great, reliable cars. That shutter ruined what could have been excellent cars. The only reason I bought a second one was because the first one was also crashed into and I found the second one with a supposedly bad engine for a real, real cheap price. I was going to put my recently installed engine in it. It ended up with no engine problems so the first one is still crashed with a Mazda dealership replaced engine because the first one went bad. I now have a 1994 Mazda Protege engine with about 44,000 miles on it for sale. It also has the transmission and I have several car parts for it including the complete, uncrashed fron end. If you're near Miami, Florida, email me at jorgana@yahoo.com or if you're willing to pay shipping, I will ship parts but you must pay upon delivery. C.O.D. or whatever.

Wow that sucks about the accident...

The last sentence of my last post ended up coming true...I bought a 2002 Nissan Altima on May 19, 2002. I couldn't take driving a crappy old car anymore.

I'm already tired of the Nissan, lol. It's a good car but the interior quality is ridiculously cheap. Although i'm sure as hell glad it doesnt do that crap that the Protege did!

I even already crashed my Altima in March 2003! the Reed Nissan body shop fixed it up perfectly though, lol. nobody can even tell there was an accident. Sorry if this post seemed like a ramble, i'm a little drunk....sorry.

Careful with getting drunk at the wrong time--like when you're driving. Otherwise, you will crash that Altima again. Then again, that waasn't why you crashed it the first time, was it? Good luck and take care.

Smile Haha

haha, no I don't get involved with that stuff! Sober driving for me! And hopefully no more accidents in the Altima...

I swear though, I am absolutely amazed at the phenomenal job the dealer's body shop did repairing my car. There was almost $6,000 worth of damage to my front end. (yes, my fault, stupid mistake, rainy slippery florida day) I expected to nitpick a bunch of little things and notice differences...but it almost seems like it's better than before the accident! The new paint somehow seems more brilliant, while still blending perfectly with the rest of the car. Weird, eh?

My sister had a brand new Mitsubishi and got wrecked really bad on the front and side in a crash. The car wouls have been deemed a total loss were it a few years older but since it was new the insurance company paid for repairs instead of a new car. It was an immaculate job just like you described yours. I'm also in Florida. I know what you mean by the weather. I think there are so many crashes here that these guys have become experts. My dad did body work all his life anyway. He's retired now and too old to do heavy work like that. What city are you in?

I'm in Orlando. That makes sense about the storms being at least part of the reason for body shops doing such a good job here. I wonder if the accident rate is elevated here...

BTW, You can e-mail me at alexsisk@cfl.rr.com . It's been so long since I've been involved in a protegeclub discussion...but they might get mad that we're having a one on one convo on a thread since it shows up in the recent threads.

That is unless someone cares to join us, lol...
