Broken Speedo Cable

Broken Speedo Cable
I have an aggravated question. The speedometer cable broke on my '94 Protege- about four inches away from where it gets screwed into the transmission. I pulled the instrument cluster (removed about a million screws, along with most of the interior of the car) so I would be able to pull the rest of the cable out of the casing. No, it doesn't work that way. So, what I am wondering is if coupler between the transmission and the firewall separates, or will I have to tear the firewall up removing the casing? It is driving me nuts. Made me think that I was working on a Volkswagen there for awhile. The dumb book doesn't show all that much. Guess you get what you pay for. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Had the same problem with my 94 LX. Tore the dash to pieces before realizing the the cable is a 2 piece design. There is a coupler about 8-10" from the end of the cable that connects to the trans-axle. Fairly easy to replace.

Yes, I knew mine was two piece from the begining, but didn't exactly know how it "uncoupled." Had to buy the whole thing from the dealer as the new one screws together, whereas the old one was a snap coupler. After playing around for awhile, I finally found out how to release the coupler.
