Clutch/flywheel diameter 4wd.. 2wd..?
Question:
Some aftermarket clutch kits list 8 7/8" (225mm) for the protege LX 2wd DOHC, others list 8 1/2". Most of the OEM clutch kits I've seen are indeed 8 1/2" (215mm), but some actually even list BOTH the 8 7/8" and 8 1/2" as valid options for the 2wd DOHC 1st gen protege. Any thoughts on this? My disc for the clutch I took out is definitely 215mm, and I'm worried that if I get an 8 7/8" one, it won't fit. By looking at the risers on my flywheel, it looks like it will be close either way whether a 225mm disc will fit in there or not. Apparently, all 4wd protege's came with the 8 7/8" disc from the factory, and their flywheels have the same .787" step height from the factory as the DOHC 2wd. If indeed the flywheels are different between the 4wd and the 2wd to allow for the larger disc diameter, could I just grab a 4wd flywheel and swap that over and use the larger disc/pressure plate?
Alternatively, if the 1g protege 2wd's did come with both 8 7/8" and 8 1/2" from the factory, anyone know which years had which?

for example lists 8 7/8" for the 1g protege 2wd dohc. Anyone bought this clutch from them and measured the disc diameter? Is it really 8 7/8" and if so, did it fit?
www.clutchmasters.com has two different entries for the 90-95 2wd dohc in their system, and while they don't tell the diameters, they are completely different part numbers.
http://www.clutchcityonline.com/mazda_protege.htm
lists the same exedy clutch set part number for BOTH the 4wd and 2wd dohc 1st gen.
www.centerforce.com lists 215mm for 2wd dohc and 225mm for 4wd.
http://www.clutchcityonline.com/ACT/mazda/protege.htm
ACT also lists the same part number and 225mm disc diameter for both the 4wd and 2wd DOHC.
Anyone have any thoughts at all on this? I'm tempted to go down to my mazda dealer and take up some of the parts guy's time looking all this stuff up in their system.

I'm aware of the differences between the 7 7/8" clutch of the SOHC versus the DOHC. The SOHC clutch has a different hub size and number of splines versus the DOHC - they won't fit, no matter how hard you try.
However, the catalogues list both a 225mm and a 215mm clutch for the DOHC 2wd. My particular LX (DOHC, 2wd), has one that is exactly 215mm. It's a daikin disc/plate, if that matters.
My question was whether the 225mm would fit without any issues, despite the fact that mine is currently a 215mm one.

different splines... hmmm. well as long at is is for your engine you are ok. why are you soo conceren over 5mm increase in diameter?? n00b, look 225mm is the list diameter for your car. You can go as large as 230mm(GTR)
pick a size and go with it. grab some guts and do it. 215, 225; quit bitching and just ******* pick one! both work
