I usually get between 26-30 mpg on my '93 LX.

I usually fill up at about 10 gallons. If I wait for 12 gallons, the car will stall. If the low fuel light comes on in my car, I have less than 4 miles to find a gas station.

Wow, do you burn oil at all? Doesn't feel like the engine is working too hard. Do you use a lot of gas? It is amazing that Mazda designed the LX to perform at such high RPM's. Sometimes I feel like I'm working the engine too hard.

Red face

Up here in Chilly Canada, our A/T 92 Protege gets around...
453km/tank or 282mi/tank.
The wife lets it warm up with the auto starter....

The 1.8 litre BP engine was also used in the Miata. In mine, I was running about 3500-3600 rpm at 70 mph. Mine went for 156,000 miles with no problem until my wife wanted me to buy a fancier car so she could arrive in style for dinner parties.
There are lots of Miatas at 200,000 miles or more and a few at 400,000-450,000 miles. On the Miata site there is a strory about a 450,000 mile Miata.

Many of the Miata owners have OCD about maintenance so the cars run forever.
The other side of the story is that my wife sold her Camry to her sister who didn't understand about changing oil or auto transmission fluid. That car died before 150,000 miles. A well-maintained Camry should run forever.

Hello,

I hope I get a lot of Milage out of the DOHC 1.8. The person who had it before me didn't change the oil much. I guess that is why it burns some oil. Depending on how I drive, I burn about a quart ever 1000 miles. I tried 15-40w to see if it would burn less, but it was about the same. I just carry a case of oil in the trunk. I have a 1995 Maxima with 195,000 miles. I put a timing chain in it at 160,000. The tensioners where making noise. (I did the chain in my back yard. Took about a week to do.) I put a water pump and timing belt in the Protege. It wasn't too bad. Just rotating the engine and trusting that you got the right tension or deflection was tricky. It is a very fast car 0 - 60 mph. I chaged the transmission fluid also. I was happy I did that. I need an A/C compressor for the A/C. It works, but makes a lot of noise. The cheapest "Panisonic" that I found was $300.00. I could take a chance with a Junk yard unit for $125.00. Today its 5 degrees out on Long Island, NY. I like the way the car handles. I read an article that it was make to compete with the BMW. I think suspension wise, it handles great. I want to put in rear shocks as soon as it warms up a little.

I have a 93 DX that i installed a DOHC into, still useing the DX wire harness injectors & PC.

I was getting 265 miles to 12 gallons or full tank with a bad o2..I have now installed a new o2 and will see what happeds with a full tank.
the engine has 100k on it and the body chassis has 214,383 miles on it.
I plan i reaching 300k ..i love this car.

gas mileage

I am still scared of running out of gas. This time I let the entire needle get about 1/8 inch below the line for "empty" and went 436 miles. It took 12.66 gallons, whcih is the most I ever put in.

I bet I could get 500 miles since I know the tank is 14.5 gallons, but it scares me to see the gas gauge that low.

If you do the division it turns out to be 34 mpg.

How did you put a DOHC in a DX? I have the DOHC in the LX. Did you ever replace the rear shock in your DX? I think replacing the rear shocks will improve the gas milage. When the car "Sits" when you take off, it take more energy. The less the car sits, the better gas milage you get and the faster the take off.

I think the fuel sending unit is easy to do. I think its under the back seat of the car. You don't have to drop the gas tank. Just remove the bottom half of the back seat and there it is, I think. My book is in the car and its snowing out. I'll look later.

OK.. with a new (Good USED one) o2 i got 344 miles to the tank....And my car is a 93 DX so i am guessing its a 12 Gallon tank. So i guess i am getting 28.6 MPG..

This is my secret.
I have a DOHC engine in a DX body but i kept the SOHC tranny which has lower (numerical) gearing. Also i Have 17 inch wheels that help.. In other words I am at 3000 RPM at about 78 MPH ...

Goopy,

I have to see a picture of this car. The car must be like a rocket ship with that tranny. Smoetiems it sucks doing 60 mph at 3000 rpms. The car is screaming. I don't know why they did that. 80 mph is 4000 rpm's. I went only 1 size bigger on the tires. I didn't think to go as large as you. The O2 sensor worked! That is good. Its like changing a spark plug. It needs to be changed every 75.000 miles. I just changed the rear struts on my car Saturday. It was very easy. The car is much more stable. I bought the Monroe Matics. $40 each. Now the car has a lot more control. I gained 2 mpg, I went from 24 to 26 mpg on my last fill up. When the car sits when you take off, it takes a lot of energy to get the car moving. The new shocks makesthe car ttake less energy to get moving. I also found the left rear calalper that I changed over the summer was leeking brake fluid. The auto parts store exchanged it for me.

Moonflag..i am attaching a pic of my car..I have two 1st gen proteges in my houshold and one parts car...So if anyone needs any parts real cheap..let me know.
I love protege's!!!!!

My car is not that fast off the hole but after say 3500 rpm it starts to pic up..I think its beacuse i have the VICS butterfly or flap locked open.. (the flap inside the manifold) and that is beacuse i sued the sohc wireharness on the dohc engine and the vacume selenoid for the vics is not used in the SOHC harness..So i jsut keep it open with a zip tiehttp://www.protegeclub.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=328957#
tooth.

I am truing to reach 500k with my protege.

Goopy,

Nice Car! I like the rims a lot. Is the red valve cover stock? The plasic piece on top of the radiator is the air resonator. I think its to quite the air intake noise. I took that off and I seemed to get better gas milage. I don't know if it makes it any faster? I will see if I can look into that flap being open. I have to look at the wiring harness. I was wondering what wiring harness you used. Can you take it out of the other car? Is it worth it? How many RPM's do you bring your car up to? Did you change the timing belt? I just turned a 163,000 miles. My car is just breaking in. I noticed that my car doesn't like synthetic oil. I get better gas milage and performance with 10-30w High milage oil. I will take pics of mine and post them. Thanks for the pics.

Yea the valve cover is stock...i cleaned & painted it..I will remove my resonatr today and see what happens..i also picked up a 1986 RX7 and will use the intake for my protege...and see what happens.

My harness is all original..it is a SOHC harness..it had everything you need for the DOHC block except the selenoid for the VICS...so i had to leave it open with a zip tie. and yea i can take the harness from the other car is you are interested....
I can bring my car up to 7500 (i think)then the rev-limiter kicks in.

good question...ive been doing some "test" on my gas millage for the past 3 weeks

when i fill up at this cheap station...i got up to 261
when i fill it up at AM/PM i got up to 285

but the results might be off by 3-5 miles...due to occasional floorings whilst trying to show off...
