If anyone has info
I talked to a mazda dealer this weekend. We went into how my gen1 was doing and about my speedometer needle being broken. I asked him what was new and coming up with mazda. He said that next year they are still only making 1500 MP3s. They are leaving the suspension the same just going to give it more horsepower. Which is a big improvement. He also told me in the next two years mazda is going to be coming out with a bigger, faster I4 engine. He said a 2.2 170 hp could be in the new proteges in less then 2 years. That would be awesome. Something to compete with the SVT ZX3 focus @ 170hp. If all goes good, I might keep the gen1 in running shape and hold out for a possible gen4 2.2 liter powerhouse of a protege. Just somethings to think about people..

this was taken from mazdausa.com:
Mazda New I4 2.3L engine
The New I4 2.3L DOHC S-VT engine slated to power the Atenza employs advanced technologies such as the S-VT (Sequential Valve Timing) , a variable induction system housed in the resin intake manifold, Tumble Swirl Control Valves, a single catalytic converter located under the floor and a dual-pipe exhaust manifold, all of which contribute to powerful performance, high fuel efficiency and low emissions.
and here is a link to the mazda japan website:

it appears that this new engine will have 175hp (probably everywhere but the usa) and it is going to be the base engine in the new mazda 6.
