Air Intake with Mass Air Flow Senser???

I have a 91 Protege 323 DX. I just got my intake in the mail today. I took it over to my friend (a mechanic) to have it installed. He did not know how to bypass the mass air flow senser. Is there a way to bypass the air flow senser or do you have to have some type of metal molded. The problem was that he could not install the cone-shaped air filter and intake without going around the senser. Thanks.

Mass Air Flow Sensor

I have a 91 Protege 323 DX. Anyone know how to bypass the mass air flow sensor when installing an air intake. Is there a way to remove the air flow sensor? Is there a way to keep it but mold a special type of metal into the form of a cicle to keep the sensor and connect the intake?

You need to buy an intake plate adapter... You can find them on ebay... It'll bolt to your MAF, and then you slid the cone on the end of it... Problem solved

whatever you do dont pull out the plug. I made this mistake and destroyed the maf. i just put on the rx7 but it still sucked to break it.

I managed to put it back together. I had to pop the black plasic cap off the top and the logic inside them isn't simple. to disconnect the maf use a screwdriver and pop the metal clip the runs around the wiring harness. then it should slide off.
thats what i meant im just dumb and cant explain myself. that day sucked. i went to the local rx7 shop and the one dude was like yea the miata racers all run rx7 mafs it will work for you. if it wasnt for that id be bendin over.

RX7 VAF How-To

I'm not flaming here, but it's a VAF, not a MAF or a MAP. It's a vane air flow meter (aka Flapper)

you say the miatas use the same vaf's as the rx7? where can i find one of these for a decent price other than ebay? im not a big fan of ebay. and im also debating about dumping the resonator box. i hear its possible to lose torque in the low range but hasnt been proven. if i did, what would i benefit from?

No, 1.6 Miatas also upgrade to the same RX7 VAF that the Protege's do.

The 1.8 Miatas don't use a VAF.

actually, several have proven it on the dyno - RandyS has, as well as a member of the escort forum. both documented a loss of torque.

edit: Darryl, i guess you just proved you ARE faster than me.....
