Speedometer cable

I was working on my friends 1990 Protege LX and we were replacing his speedometer cable and ran into a bit of a problem. The new cable seems to be about 3-5 inches too short!

Our old cable had corroded off so we managed to remove that one successfully but now we have a cable that's just too short to do any good. Is there an extension we should have purchased as well?

Thanks-
Justin

Did you get one for a Mazda? cause IIRC, the Escort cables are a bit shorter.

Well talking with my friend, he said that he told the Mazda dealer he needed one for a 90 protege lx. They had to order it, I wonder if they ordered the Escort GT since it uses the same engine.

actually the 90 EGT is different, it changed to the Mazda BP engine in 91.

It may not be routed the right way or something...

When I replaced mine a few years back the lady at the parts desk said I had to get a two piece cable. She said Mazda changed it at one point. Maybee they only gave you half of it. I would check into that. Im trying to find the recipt for ya, I saw it just a few days ago when I was going through stuff. If I find it I will post part #'s.

Ok here it is:

PART NO. / DESCRIPTION / PRICE
BTAR-60-070 / M126 SPEEDO CAB / $42.64
BTAR-60-080 / M126 SPEEDO CAB / $31.06

Im not sure if these part #'s are specific to Mazda or the place I bought it from though.

Cool thanks for the info guys. We did try rerouting it but it's pretty much a straight shot. The Mazda dealer is closed till Monday so it looks like we're out of luck till then. I did drive his car though and was very impressed. I think I may have a protege in my future
