95-98 distributor?

95-98 distributor?
Did somebody tried advancing the ignition timing with the distributor?
I did but I'm not sure it's really effective.
In my Haynes manual they explain this (page 5-3, schematics 5.2a and b) :
The 2ndgen distributor include: camshaft Position sensor, Ignition Control Module and Ignition coil.
The Ignition Control Module is present only in the 2nd gen distributor.
Does it work like a variable ignition timing system?
Is it advancing or retarding the ignition timing depending of the conditions? (Fuel octane, engine temp, volume of air, O2 in the exhaust...)
Cause if it is, their's no benefit to advance cause the PCM will adjust it anyways. I guess...?
I'm using 91 octane, the PCM will set the ignition timing so it gives a good A/F ratio?...
A lot of questions hey, sorry if their's too much but I'm crazy about getting the best my 1.8 can give me!
Thanks!
