Custom CAI

would anyone happen to know if it is possible to make a custom CAI for second gens? if so, what materials are involved and just how i would overall go about doing it. i tried looking for ones already made but i don't find anything for the pro.

Same here, man. When I get my break between classes next spring, I am going to look at all size and shapes of pipes that I can get my hands on. I have a cone-filter now on my pro, but I still have a stock pipe. Therefore, I do not want just a custom short-ram, I want the whole thing. I would rather spend 30-40 bucks on some custom pipes then to buy Civic or another car's intake and mess with that. Though, if you get to make before I do, I want to know the details. Thanks.

There is nothing wrong with them. First, the ones they make are for 95-96 only, and it requires some small mod, which is not a big deal. I have a 97 model, which has a slightly different setup. Second, it is expensive, and it is only a short ram, it is not a cold air intake. Like I said before, I would rather spend the same or even less money to build something that can actually be better. But it is not happening yet, so this is only an idea of mine.

my feelings exactly. i'd rather meke my own custon CAI. you get better performance and it costs less. i just don't know how to go about even doing it, cause i'd like to do it as soon as possible. i already did my first oil change on her. this is the next project.

My custom intake is a cross between and short ram and cai. It uses the bends from a 97 Prelude and silicone joins. The air comes in from the inner fender to the filter and it uses an insulated area to keep it cool . Here is a pic

This set up locates the filter further from the engine heat but allows trouble free wet driving and I leave it on all winter.

i made a post about making a custom cai a while ago, and had a link to a del sol website that had a good how to on making your own cai. i havent tried it yet but its still somthin im thinkin about doing in the future.

hey kansei, i like your system. its the most practical for where i live. i was wondering if you could tell me exactly what you did and what you need to buy. i'm going to attempt to do this myself so i kinda want an experienced persons help. i would also like to know how difficult it was to make. another thing, can i technically just take off my air box from the sensor down, and just put on a filter connected to the original piping? thanks

You certainly can, because that is what I did on my car. Right now, I just have a cone filter connected to stock pipe: here is a pic.

One thing though, about air temp sensor. Make sure you dont leave it in the engine bay, and see if you can slide it inside the cone filter before you tighten it on. This is on 97-98 models only, unfortunately, the intake on 95-96 is slightly different.

thanks turbonium, i think thats what i'm going to do. one thing though, what size filter did you buy, and what company, and price? also, what do you mean about not leaving the air sensor in the engine bay. i haven't actually taken it apart so forgive me for my stupidity. thanks.

There is no such thing as a stupid question. The air temp sensor, you will find it pluged into the top of the air box. It measures the temp of air coming into the engine, which tell ECU which rpm to use when the car warms up. Otherwise, it doesn't matter. You see, when you are going to take off the box, you will need to do something with the sensor, or it will dangle out there in the engine bay. So what I did was, 1) the filter I bought ("Intimidator" came with heat shield for $20, you can get one like it at NAPA, Pep Boys, Autozone, etc - They are all universal and fit right on the pipe) fits right on the stock intake pipe. 2) the air temp sensor should have a wire just long enough to slide inside the cone filter, and then put the filter on. It should not hurt the air temp sensor wires as you tighten the clamp of the filter. 3) disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, and pump the brake pedal to reset ECU, and reconnect the terminal. Start the car, and begin driving. The check engine light should not come on, and if it does, try to reset the ECU again. And also, you should take a mounting bracket and secure the intake from moving around. You will see what I mean, when you take the airbox off. If not, I will try to find some pics. Good luck.

i used a civic intake...it was easy overall...just took me a little bit of thinking to figure it all out...i also used Bruce's help about it too for one part where i got stuck...heres a link where you can check it out...My Intake

Thats a nice looking intake, but we are planning on making a CAI, not just a short-ram.

Talking custom DIY CAI

I have been checking this out. Apparently you can set the whole thing up for about $70 (US). You need a 2.5" diameter mandrel bent aluminized steel pipe (JC Whitney sells these for like $20), some misc. pipe fittings and connectors and a funnel ram filter. I have lots more info on this issue. I looked into both a shortstack and a true CAI that can be modified to a shortstack in really wet weather. If you are interested in the results of my research, email me and I will forward you everything I have including some pics of installed systems. I have not yet installed a system, but I am days away.
