Question DIfference between SHort Shifter and Reg???????

what The actual difference between a short shifter and the regular shifter. I mean beside looks and distance. Cause what I'm understanding...I can just take my shift **** off. Then cut the stem down a little. Then put my **** back on.. And boom. I have a short shifter.... So is there any other difference...???????

nah dude! a short shifter is bent differently so that your actual throw is shorter. ie you will move your hand less distance between each gear.

let me describe it another way....if you plotted the point where your **** is at each gear change then installed the shifter and plotted them again, those points would be closer together.

less work for you and everyone i've heard from who installed it says it made the gearbox feel a lot more positive - have you tried changing from 1st to 2nd at 6500rpm? you'll see what i mean.

if you cut your regular shifter down all you'll have is a short-looking shifter, the throws will still suck.

b&m, pacesetter, kartboy.......

Installation instructions a-la Wil (GroHarlem)

if you search these forums for "short shifter" or one of the companies above you should find a heap of threads from people who have installed them already.

the pace setter one looks pretty nice, and its way cheaper than i thought. Is the pace setter one a good buy? or should i avoid it and save up for the B&M?

there are two things you can do to make a "short shift".

1. Visualize the shifter moves like a V. The two points on top of the V are the two points you shift. The left point tip of the V is your 1, 3, 5 and the right side of the V point tip is your 2, 4, R.
When cut the shift lever, the distance between the two points will be shorter when the angle between them doesn't change. This is one way how the short shifter works.

2. Again visualize teh shifter moves like a V with same properties above. Except this time you don't cut the shift lever. But you move the pivot point upward. Imagine your stock pivot point is very close to the bottom of the V. When shift it moves from one side of the V to the other in a VERY short distance. But when you move the pivot point UP. No one does it and you can't, but lets say you move the pivot point all the way to the top. This way, when you shift the same distance as before, but the shift arm actually travels A LOT more than before. Therefore, your shift is now shorter.

Conclusion:
To make the shortest throw would to have the pivot point as high up as possible and the shift lever as short as possible.

BUT, if you shift faster than the synchor, there is no point. Hope this helps!

Just to let you know I found that, Corky Sport has Pacesetter Short Shifter listed in their catalog.

Good luck.

No it won't, they will have to prove the part you installed actually cause the damage. BUT, they could easily say that because of the short shifter, you might have shifted faster than the synchor sometime, which cause the damage to the tranny. I would advise you to keep the stock shifter. Just incase if something were to happen (knock on wood), just smack the shifter back in and bring the car in. Realistically, whoever shift faster than the tranny could sync (all the time), shouldn't be driving a stick...

I have a B&M install in my Pro and it shifts like a dream!
With some Redline MTL oil 70w80 in the tranny, your synchros will be faster to suit the short throw.
