Engine Swap? (2nd Gen)
#4
There's been a lot of debate about going with the entire BPT engine or adding the external parts necessary to turbo a stock BPT engine. I know the B6T engine had much stronger connecting rods than the stock BPT, and Mazda no longer produces the stronger rods. Does the BPT use the stronger rods also? I would assume it does with the factory turbo. If so, it might be a better idea to go with the entire BPT engine, especially if you plan to increase the boost beyond the stock levels. As almost everyone here knows, the BP engine has a very strong bottom end, probably pretty close to the heralded Nissan SR20 and Mitsubishi 4G63 engines. Considering it has a closed deck, it's probably stronger than the Honda B16 & 18 engines. The stronger rods make a big difference if you want to really turn the power up.
