Question on changing timing/drive belts.
I have a 1998 Protege ES. I can hear squeeky noise from the engine bay and I believe is the drive belts. I might have drop some oil on it when I was checking the oil level. I am at about 101,000 miles right now, so it's not too far from getting the belts changed.
I used to have a Subaru and it's so darn easy to change EVERYTHING. but this mazda is a pain to do it. Seems like I would have to take off A LOT of stuff just to change the belts. Is there a good book, site, instructions, or anything that I could use to follow and change the belts? Thanks!

THe FSM is probably the best. I have a haynes manual, its *ok* but not the best. I don't know about a chilton manual though.
You've got the 1.8l, same here, its not that hard, although clearances are pretty tight. To get at the PS/AC belt you'll have alot more room work (relatively speaking) if you remove the passengerside headlight.
I made a tool about 18'' long, with an sort of "F" kinda shape at the end to help me with putting the belts into place. It really helped
Check it out.:
