I would check your oil pan more closely. Take an old rug, and wipe off all the dirt, and then check it in a week. I have +50K on mine, and so far no leaks, and I check my oil dipstick regularly, and the car does not 'eat' that much oil. Did you just notice the problem, or has it been happening regularly?

Try checking your PCV valve...a clogged one will result in burning more oil.

Is it burning or leaking. If your burning oil, you won't see signs of a leak anywhere (like you described). Have you witnessed (blue) smoke? If so, is it during constant acceleration or just when you start accelerating from a stop?

my car has 78,xxx miles on it...and im not burning oil at all...take a rag or even a piece of paper and place it over the muffler tip when the car is at idle...if it blows oil onto the rag or paper it is burning oil...i thought my car was burning oil cause it smoked one day but turns out it wasnt...my muffler doesnt spit out anything...runs perfect....

I've never heard of this method. At idle, if it is burning oil, it's not going to be burning much oil; probably not enough to make a noticable difference on a rag unless there is something really wrong.

Bruce, how many miles are on your car?

the most common reason for burning oil I find are the valve stem seals. They will give smoke mainly on cold starts as the oil has had a chance to sit on the seals and soak down the valve stem into the combustion chamber. Any other major oil burning problem is usually the oil rings have stuck and will require a rebuild. Older b2600 and b2200 trucks had oil burning problems but if it was slight( 1 qt-1500 miles ) a good pcv valve would help. Also if you try the pcv valve make sure to use an OEM valve . There is a reason why they are more expensive. My 1.8 is burning oil now and I'll rebuild it when my parts are in (rings are on backorder)

ive seen cars that blow a lot of oil onto the rag even at idle...also i forgot to mention you also have someone else there to give it some gas too...

i noticed that my oil level will drop from full to a bit above empty over the course of my 5000 kilometre

but that is 5000 highrevving kilometres

is that normal??

That's pretty high oil consumption. So no, that's not normal.

You say just a bit above empty. If that is guaged by the dip stick, the low mark is approximately 1 quart below full, which of course is still not good. Watch in your mirrors, especially when starting to accelerate from a stop for blue smoke. (Accelerating from a standstill typically means worn valve guides/seals while blue smoke under normal driving conditions/'moving' acceleration typically is a sign of worn rings or cylincer walls.)

well the underneath of my 96 lx has what looks like oil all over the pan and whatnot. but the oil doesn't leak cause i've left the car parked for a week at a time sometimes and there is no drip marks. its just that everything is saturated down there.

My 1.8 was BUURNIN!! I got a new valve cover gaskets and it fixed right up. I originally thought it was the valve spring seals but nope it was the cover gasket.

Wile you pull the plug cables take out the sparks and see if any of them have oil on them. That'll confirm it.

Mine doesn't seem to burn oil at the exhaust tip but I add some everyweek( 0.1 to 0.2l under Full 0.8l on the dip stick). I'm using 4000-5000rpm often.
I use 10w30 Mobil 1, have the pcv change (not Mazda OEM), the head gasket too and their's no drips under.

I have use different brand and viscosity of oil in the pass but know i'll keep on with 10w30 Mobil 1. Could it been damaging internals? I did a complete flush between different type of oil.
