Cutting Stock Spring
i was in chicago three days ago, i saw this 97 protege es with 18 inch white about 2 inch drop. so i decided to ask because the car tight really tight..i find that he cut his stock spring about 2 round to lower the car and i ask how it handle he said it pretty good and the dude seem happy his protege................so i want hear all the pros and cons on cutting the stock spring to low a car. i am pretty sure there is lot to be in this area so let hear it

haha , i know the guy that owns that car, he will be in new york sometime this week and should holla at me .. but he won't have those 18's on and he will raise the car up some,, He is running groundcontrol coilovers with factory shocks and 18" rims ... he is from florida by the way

I use to be totally against cutting springs I thought it was the cheap way to go and it made for a VERY rough ride, however my boyfriend (1fatES) cut his springs on his 2002 Pro and surprisingly it rides very well. The only reason we cut the springs in the first place is he got tired of waiting around for a company to come out with coilovers and none of the springs avaiable had a big enough drop to make them worth purchasing. It seems like the ride quality is comparable to a Honda with just coilovers. We are still planning on getting springs for the Pro in the future, but in the mean time it looks REALLY good. We'll try and get some pictures up soon.

I feal the same way , A few months ago I thought about cutting my springs, but then quickly changed my mind after reviewing spring rates of some springs, . I think it is just really worth the time to just wait for the proper springs and get them on the car

you know that you can actually lower your car without cutting or heating or welding your spring.....that right check this link.

Ok the only reason i cut my springs was because when i got my car there was nobody that made springs for my car that had a big drop that i wanted.....but now they make coilovers for the protege and that is what im planning on buying next....and if you plan on cutting your springs then let me tell you what dont do it even thou mine ride just as good as some springs dont do it if they make them for your car.....only do it if you dont have money to spend on spring and you just want to look good and what to spend lots of money on tires and fixing anything that go wrong if you dont do it right.........just my .02 cents

cutting springs is illegal here in nz and will void your insurance simply because of the unreliable handling characteristics you get when you change a spring's spring rate....they might look and feel better but their performance is no longer predictable - specially if you push your car.
you can't get a certificate of fitness to drive on our roads with cut springs but not surprisingly lots of people do it.
of course, i'm just grumpy cos i can't afford springs at the moment
