Looking for TSB detailed information
I browsed Alldata for TSB titles and came across the following ones that seem to apply to my '96 1.8 auto, does anyone have access to the whole TSB text ? Where else could I find detailed info ?
91007 - JAN 02 - Recall - Headlamp Switch Replacement Renotification
K00998 - SEP 98 - A/T - Selector Lever Hard To Operate
T01697 - DEC 97 - Room Lamp - Does Not Illuminate
R00397 - DEC 97 - Stabilizer Bar - Clunk Noise When Turning
T00997 - AUG 97 - Door Switch - Interior Lamp Does Not Illuminate
I have squeaking acc. belts, will install new belts over the weekend but based on searching the forums I believe my alternator might be going too (pulsating squeak at low rpm), I will look for bearing noise.
There is also the clunking right front endlink to replace (have the part - TSB R00397 ?) and some hard to pinpoint exhaust leak, barely audible but I can smell exhaust in the car at startup. Will try to remove the manifold heat shield and look underneat.
Also ordering tires this afternoon, will go with Yokohama Avid Touring in stock 185/65-14 size for a smooth ride, remember this is a car for a family of five so comfort comes before performance !
Last will be tranny fluid and coolant flush, window tinting and within a few weeks I should have a much more pleasant car to drive !
Thanks to all for feedback on the TSB's.

TSB's won't do you any good now since your car is "older". At least if you're trying to get the dealer to fix these things at least.
You keep the protege as the daily driver and the SHO as the weekend warrior? Thats what I used to do. Da SHO pwn3Z jo0!!

I hope the TSB text will help me pinpoint the problems that I would fix myself. And if the safety recall applies to my car, it should be no charge at the dealer ?
Actually, I use the SHO as my daily driver and leave the Protege to my wife & kids, and also use the Protege on the weekends as a family car. The SHO is running OK but nowhere near pristine shape, A/C is out and needs a new drier, steering rack will need a swap soon, usual rattles & squeaks, etc. I did a lot of work like rear suspension, brakes, subframe bushings, a complete and thorough 60K a few years ago, recently replaced injectors & radiator... Had it for 12 years, still fun to drive but I am no SHO fanatic so I keep it on the road & safe but put the money on the Protege. Within a few years one will have to go and make room for a minivan, most probably an MPV the SHO will be the one leaving.

aw man, don't lose the SHO! sure it's 12yrs old but it still drops 74hp/litre and will roast most V6's on the road today (including those pesky GTP's and most older 5.0 stangs).
The MPV is a good choice though. You'll enjoy it. The 3.0L engine shares it's roots with the SHO. Maybe you could do a swap?!?!

your squealing acc belts.
hey Nathaluc,
Please post if you are able to resolve your squealing acc belts with the standard replace and tension approach. I had a squealing alternator/waterpump belt on my '95 protege. The guys at the garage i took it to told me my alternator was going. I wasn't losing charge or anything, but i took them at their word. They said it was the alternator getting ready to seize based on the condition of the belt.
The belt was quiet for a while, and then starts squealing again for a short time after ignition. the belt snaps within 12,000 miles. The alternator work they did for me is still under warranty, go i go back to the shop. The guys at the garage tell me my crank pulley is bent and it needs replaced. (they wanted $275 for a new pulley and $75 for labor) I tell them to just put a new belt on.
I ordered a used crank pulley from a salvage yard, get it on with help from a friend, put on a new alt belt, and new a/c / power steering belt. The belt was quiet for all of one day.
The belt has started squealing again. The squeal after starting the car is worse/longer if the car has a higher electrical load. (ie if i have the headlights on, the rear defrost, the heat fan or the AC.)
the only thing left on this belt that has not been replaced within the last 20,000 miles is the water pump. If you or anyone else have suggestions as to my next step to fix this damn squealing belt, please let me know.
best,
mookie

I replaced the acc. belts last weekend and it fixed the pulsating squeak at low rpm, the engine is now silent, what a relief. It also stopped squealing for a few days, more on that below. I did check the alternator when the belt was off and I felt a very slight grind in one spot when turning it by hand. I chose to leave it and see how it goes in the next few weeks/months. I listen to the bearings on a weekly basis to see how it is doing under tension, but so far so good. BTW, the car has 150,000km (94,000mi) and has the original alternator.
Now on the squealing, the alternator belt started acting up again, but I believe the new belt stretched as would be expected. I will tighten it up tonight and let you know.
