I am not sure about the widest, but i do know that when I had my 16's they were 16x7 and to be honest I think I could have used a 16x8 ,,,, but where would you find a rim of such width ,,, very rare I think ..... I know though if I do decide to get a set of 16's again they would have to be lightweight cause our 1.5L does not take well to those big wheals .... you will be surprised how long it will take you to reach 110 mph ,, not like I am promoting it .... but the handeling is much better ,, but remeber to look into either a engine swap or a turbo add on ... you can add a turbo on pretty easy ... really after I get the gtx motor ,, I may take the 1.5 to a shop and ask them to do up a manifold .. I know Marcin in jersey knows some people , so I may check him ...
anyway later

i have 17s now on the back(15s on the front due to stupid reasons...17s for front coming VERY soon) and they are all 205 width tires....i havent noticed any rubbing or anything and i am lowered 1.8 inches(intrax springs) the only thing i noticed is that if i take a left turn then i hear a clicking type noise...not sure if something ios scraping against the tire in the wheelwell or what...but the 205s fit fine on 17s(i havent tired 17s in the front yet)

I have 17 X 7 43MM Offset Konig Tantrums with Yokohama Parada 205/40-17 Tires. They don't rub, and they bring the edge of the wheel out to the edge of the body so the wheelwells look filled up. Compared to the stock 13's, what a difference, the car looks, and feels completly different. ...and sticks like glue!!!
