1.6L engine upgrades on a budget
#31
I thank all for replies and now have basically accepted that my 99 Protege will not be the fastest car on the road. I had tossed around the idea of an engine swap with a 2.0 liter, but even if I could save that much money, I'm not sure i'd want to go there. I mena, my car runs good now and is dependable. I can forsee problems resulting from an engine swap. I'll do put on some parts, i.e. cold air intake, muffler, and some cosmetic stuff, but the more I think about it, I think the better course of action is to just have this car see me through the rest of high school and college and trade it in later on a faster car. A Mazdaspeed Protege maybe?

The B16B does 200hp afaik and that's 1.6L. It's the one used in the Civic EK9 Type R Hatchback. If you want a 2L engine how about an H22A? Expect broken axles, though.
Also, Honda cars have programmable ECUs as well and have a lot of tuning options.
Our engines don't even use technology akin to VVTI and VTEC3. I'm not disparaging Mazda, it's just that in drag racing our cars are no match.
It's not just Honda. Mitsubishi has good engines as well. The Lancer/Mirage has the 4G63T from the Evolution line which does massive hp and torque (read: 276hp). There's also the MIVEC engine as well.
For Nissan they have the SR20DET.
It's not just horsepower, as well. Other car manufacturers seem to have more tuning possibilities, hence making their cars better drag machines.
As for concentrating on rotary, I suppose I should have worded it better. Mazda's top-of-the-line is the RX8 and RX7. Both are rotary. I think it's safe to say that most of R&D goes to that line.
For Honda, they concentrate on NA. Look at the NSX. It's NA as well even for the Civic Type R and Integra Type R.
Toyota's TRD has supercharged engines. Even the measly 4A-FE equipped Toyota's here in the Philippines have it better than the Proteges here as they can avail of the Tom's Turbo, not to mention the proliferation of Silvertops.
At any rate, I'll leave it at that as I'm no expert I don't think I should argue

......
No car in our class is stock fast....and everyone in here seems to have there own option on what "fast" is...I think (quarter mile time) a 16- is fast and thats all I want and I belive ill do that with H/I/E and IGNETION with high preformance spark plug wires and some light weight rims and low pro tires...and if I want to go into the 15s- ill throw some NOS on it....are cars will NEVER be a 9 second car...or even a 10...I think the fastest ive ever seen was a 12 and that was a full out drag car...eevrything stripped and stuff..anyways...thats fast to me....I just want to be able to cruise the streets and be a civic killer...ya know

I agree with Protege_Joe. I just want some more power to get around that pesky 18-wheeler going up the highway, or the power to tear a Civic up once and awhile. I'm not looking to go drag racing or anything.

When you said fast, I was thinking you wanted a 14s protege or something. I don't really regard 17s and 16s as fast becuase I've seen SUVs and some trucks run low-16s and high-15s stock.
Like you said, peoples opinion of fast is different. My opinion of fast is 14s or lower. If that's the case, then I/H/E should suit you fine w/an ocassional use of NOS...lol, I mean N2O.
BTW, if you're thinking about using something like a MSD ingnition, you can scratch that thought because they are not capadable with our cars.

i got a simota air intake (open type with a chamber that resembles the one from the stock intake but larger) for what would be around US $90 here in the philippines. it was imported from taiwan. it's bolt-on and is compatible with the sensor. i'd post pictures but i'll wait for my engine bay to be detailed first haha.

i agree, everyone bitches, and complaines about no parts for our little 1.6ers, then when finally someone spends thousands of dollars in research, developement, and parts, ie: bikman, and actually comes out with a turbo kit for the 1.6, no one wants to spend the money. all i hear is dont turbo the 1.6, do a 2.0 swap, thats ghey, your going to get way more power out of a turbo 1.6 than a 2.0 swap. also i heard someone say its not going to be reliable, or it wasn't his daily driver, well actually he drove that car for a good year, everyday, and beat it on the track.
