OK, now I've had my "new" car for two days and love it, but has anyone else experienced the "clunking" when the car shifts and when it is stopped? I have an automatic. Is this just a sports car thing? The dealer said it is normal. It also stalled once when I was accelerating. Engine was running, but I just didn't move! Thanks for any help. Susan

 

I dont think its normal that your engine revs but the car doesnt move,if you were on ''drive''.An automatic transmission is supposed to be smooth unless you have a mazda 626 hahaha!........you should bring it to another dealer saying you did not have the time to bring it where you bought it and you would like them to just try the car....they will be more honest aboout it than you dealer.

 

I have a 99 ES auto too. I had this problem once. That was early Spring morning when I was running late and didn't get to warm up the car.

 

I don't think any automatic transmission should do that, however you will find that with age, automatics will not be as smooth shifting as when they are newer. Heavy clunking is a concern, though. Have it checked out.

Interesting though that the manual says that warming up the car is not neccesary. Infact for less emissions it says dont warm up the car just go. Thought this was odd.

 

What you just described reminded me of my 93' Galant, it's an auto and it does the revving up thing without moving sometimes, it usually does it when the engine is cold or when you take it out of P, it's a problem with the tranny but I didn't get it fixed cuz mitsubishi's auto trans are a pain to work on, most mechanics told me that if the problem didn't bother me much then I should leave it the way it is. I know how to drive it so it wont do it to me, you just need to get the hang of it, but when someone else drives my car, well, it's a whole other story. Funny story, once I put in R and start acelerating but the car doesn't move( I was talking to someone at the moment and forgot all about my tranny problem) so I keep accelerating and the car revs up to 5.000rpm, that's when the gear finally kicked in, at 5.000rpm! I almost broke my neck...

it's not normal though, there's something wrong with your tranny, if it's under warranty then have it fixed.

Thanks, I haven't had the stall again. But this clunking is funny. I figured out that when the A/C is off, it doesn't clunk at all! But put it on, and CLUNK, every minute or two when at a dead stop. But as long as it isn't dangerous, I guess I'm not worried. Still, if anyone knows what I'm talking about, I'd appreciate any info. Thanks, Susan

 

Hang on, so you're saying that you only notice the clunking when you are stopped with the A/C on? Hmm, the first sound that came to mind when you mentioned that is the A/C compressor cycling on and off.
