AEM vs. Injen
#18
Thanks for your input everybody. I've decided on the Injen CAI. For those of you that have them how was the installation? Aside from just removing the stock setup and bolting on the Injen is there any actual work? I can see by the picture that Bijou5 put up that the coolant bottle has to be moved. What's involved with that? And bracket making, or a simple move?
Thanks,
Mason

this is easy installation.
I'm a noob about installing car stuff, but I even did it.
everything is in injen's instruction.
and you don't need to move front bumper to install air filter either.
pm me if you need more information

Yeah, I agree, everything is relatively easy. Just take your time and focus on what you're doing. Oh, and I would keep all the stock stuff in a box with all the bolts in a baggie just incase you need to put it back together!
Injen= Thumbs Up!

Hey all,
I finally got my Injen CAI but I'm a little frustrated.
I started to install it, but realized that in Figure 2 of the instructions there's something I'm not getting.
The (black rubber) stock section of the current air intake from the air mass sensor back has a bracket holding a small black plastic box with some wires running through it. I don't see in their instructions where it shows you what to do with this after installing the new pipe. Is that the purge control valve? If so I have no idea what the hell to do with it using the image of figure 5 as reference.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mace_Ace

I just installed mine a few weeks back. You mount one of the two provided L brackets (the other is for relocating the resevoir). Once mounted to the purge control valve, you atach it to another part in the back there... I dont remember exactly where, it is hard to describe. But basically, you kind of bend it to the left a bit, and there is a nut you can take off, place it over the screw, then put the nut back on. If you look real close at the picture, you will see it. It is not clear, but fear not, you will find a place for it. Main thing is you need to tie it down somewhere, I guess it could be anywhere out of the way.
Probably this didnt help... but it really *is* hard to describe. Just poke around, youll be alright... I was, and I am a serious noob.
Good luck.

Thanks Outlander3001,
I figured it out, but my purge control vavle looked markedly different than the one in the image on the instructions. That didn't help ;-)
I got id done and took it for a test drive already. Thanks to everyone who helped.

It sounds great with a 5 speed. Someone here posted sound clips of his auto, but you can't really get into the high RPM range obviously.
Performance wise it's what others have said; negligable HP gain (2-4), but the throttle response is much quicker.
If you are getting the Injen got to adventon.com. It was $206 including shipping, and it arrived in about 7 days.
It is easy enough to install yourself, but be mindful that in figure 5 where they show the bracket bolted to the Purge Control Valve that your's will look much different with extra metal, and plastic housing, as well as wires. If you don't know what I'm talking about ask me again when you get the instructions and I'll help you out.

the cheapest thing to do is to buy a 2.75" cone filter for about $30 from any speed shop and hook it up to the air mass sensor. Then you can eihter drill a small hole for the temp. sensor or do what I did and wrap it around somewhere in the engine bay close to where the filter is. I've had this for about 3 months now with no problems. Next thing I'm doing is build a custom heat shield for maybe another $10 in materials.
I personally would not take the risk of having a cold air intake in my daily driver and hydraulock my engine. I have seen any of that!! for what a 1-2 HP gain over a short ram intake? not worth it for E! IMO

for some reason our cars do not respond as well to cold air as other cars do. I am sure a cai will make 1-2 extra whp, but is it really worth the headache? To me it is not. I don't care what anyone says about "how hard" it's to hydraulock your engine. I have seen many people hydraulock their engine and at least 1 of those people had to get rid of the car because he could not afford the reapairs.

I was under the impression that the gains made by aftermarket intakes are magnified as other mods are added to the engine. So with a CAI, the additional 1-2 HP over a short ram could potentially be a few HP more than that, as other mods are added. Is this not correct? Anyone have any input? Am I wrong on this?
