any benifits to synthetic over regular oil??
okay heres teh deal..
I'm getting an oil change this weekend and was gonna get synthetic and still am but I am jsut wondering if there is any real difference?? is there any performance benifits or jsut better for the engine? I know my pareents jag was "supposed to use synthetic" at least thats what the old owner said but the mechanic said that those engines leak too much with synthetic because it is a thinner oil.. so tahts got me wondering why use synthetic? even though I am still gonna use it even if there are no real benifits..

Wal-mart selling Mobil 1 CHEAP!!
went to wal-mart today, and saw them selling 5 quart containers of Mobil 1 for only $17.88
that price alone will make me want to convert to synthetic!
go check your local wal-mart to see if they have it on sale in your area.
btw the store I went to is in fairfax VA

Ah, but is Mobil 1 still synthetic?
There's a big debate with a variety of lab results (from a poster) going on one of the VW boards. Apparently Mobil has made some pretty major changes with the SL-level oil (vs SJ), and the mass breakdown, volatility, and flow characteristics now look a whole lot more like dinosaur juice. Mobil says it's still a synthetic, but Mobil also lost the lawsuit to keep Castrol from calling Syntec a synthetic so are they now doing the same thing Castrol is?
I can't find the article posted here that pointed to the thread, but here's the thread:

One interesting note based on my understanding of "pours" vs. "pumps" is that the old formula pumped at -58, while the new one pours at -49. Unfortunately, as I understand it pouring at -49 means it pumps at around -39 (or higher). This is for 5W-30.
How important this is for those of us not running turbos is a question, but if nothing else it's likely that oil consumption will go up slightly with the newer version.
