ATF Change
I am going to change the ATF in my 2002 Protege LX to Redline. This is my first auto, so I had a few questions.
First of all after I drain it, Is their a filter that I need to change in there.
Also, when I do refill it, can I just refill it by using a funnel and putting it in where you check it, or do I need to pump it in like you do in a MT?
A link to a how to would be great. I can't find a Haynes anywere in town.

Yes, just refill using a funnel on the tranny fluid dipstick tube.
There should be a filter, however, I haven't had luck finding it by asking at a parts store. Maybe I'll try the dealership sometime. I'm way overdue.

Changing the tranny fluid in an automatic isn't as simple as in a manual..
You don't just drain the old fluid out and put new fluid in.. a proper flush involves letting the tranny pump out the fluid while the car is running while pouring in fluid at the same rate. I believe most garages use a machine to do the job.
A "completely" flush involves doing all this while you're in gear, and some mechanics recommend shifting through all the gears during the process to get all the old goo out... and removing and cleaning out the pan (and scrubbing it clean).. it can be rather involved, depending on how complete a job you want.. it can take hours and be very messy if you don't know what you're doing ..
There is a filter in there somewhere.. that you get at by taking the pan off.. I switched to synth ATF at 20k KM, so there was no need to change the filter (they typically only do it if your car has 100k+ km on it)
I think it's more hassle then it's worth.. I'd just take it to a garage and have them do it. But if you do decide you want the fun of doing it yourself.. buy lots of extra fluid.. eg a 7 gallon capacity tranny, you'll need 10+ gallons to do a proper flush.
