B&M Short Shifter ???

ok well i probably should have asked this before i bought this part but oh well, then it wouldnt be fun. well i bought this part from Advanced Imports, that lil banner thing, i want to confirm that this is a quality place, i just get a lil nervouse ordering stuff sometimes. also any who has it, was it an easy install? and what kind of difference did it make in shifting, and throw length? thanks for all your help in advance.

B&M is a quality product, and the company has been around for a long time. I don't have personal experience with the short shifter for the Protege, but it is on my list of "neeed to get" . I have had a B&M star-shifter in a previous project, and it was comperable to a swiss time piece

Hello Atigeve, and Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to our Club. There are TWO BIG fridge'S in the corner with anything you can think of in them...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have.

make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

As for your shifter....as Rebel told you....you got a FINE piece of automotive craftsmenship.....

I have the shifter....as for ease of installation...that sort of depends on YOUR level of experience. For me....it took about an hour, and was a piece of cake....

NOW....here is the kicker....the shifter comes with ABSOLUTELY NO INSTRUCTIONS.....just the shifter in a box.....HOWEVER, if you will go to the HOW TO section of this board there is a HOW TO....and if you would do a search...you will find a TON of information on how we did the install. Just do all the homework before you start the install.

Just a few tips.

for starters....you will have to remove the shift ****, and then the complete console....

Have a pair of internal snap ring pliers when you do the job...makes it 10 times easier.....

Ensure you do NOT throw away the snap ring or the oring that you will remove from the top of the stock shifter as you will have to reinstall them.....

ensure you carefully remove the two small bushings from the bottom of the shifter where the connecting linkage bolt goes through....they too will need to be installed into the bottom of the new shifter.

take care when removing the dust boot off of the bottom of the stock shifter as you have to reuse it with the B&M and that is what keeps all the nasty elements out of your shifter mechanism.

Put LOTS of lube on the houseing and its o-rings when you are installing the shifter itself into the housing in the car.

TAKE YOUR TIME.....

after doing a search on B&M and reading all that there is....start your project....you should be fine.

I got my BM SS installed at my dealer, but the SS is really nice, however you might want to consider some synthetic oil in your tranny to make things easier for you when you shift into first or second. If you live in a cold place, the first gear is a #@$% to get into. But other than that, its really sweet, shortened the throw by a fair bit.

I agree with Sir Nuke, the B and M short shifter was a great improvement, really enhances driveability and "fun quotient". I am very pleased with the improvement. Shifting feels solid, crisp and significantly shorter throw. Enjoy!

here is a thread I started that has a description of the install of the shifter itself.

http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...5&pagenumber=1

Okay....after digging around some more....I now remember that there ARE instructions with the shifter.....the above thread does describe that part...the actual shifter install....

what it DOESN'T tell you is how to remove your console....

first there are a total of 6 screws that hold the console in. if you look on either side of the console up front on the side you will see two "buttons" that are covers over two of these screws.....look for the notch on the side of these as the little caps are HINGED....and gently pry it off and then remove those two screws.

second....remove the shift ****.

third.....put your hands into the cup holders and pull back gently....the entire cupholder/shifter bezel will pop loose...its only held in place by some clips....remove that.

forth.....stick a few fingers in the bezel that goes around the E-brake handle....and pull up...it too is only held in by clips and will pop out.

fifth.....look down at the floor in the hole that you just made by removing the bezel around the e-brake handle...you will see two screws that hold the center part of the console to the floor....remove those two screws.

sixth......move both the front seats as far forward as they will go...there are two screws, one on each side that are toward the rear of the console. remove those.

the console is all loose now.....you can remove it by moving it up and back. Place it out of the way....you are now ready to remove your stock shifter.

if you need any more help....just let me know.
