Backorder for Mazda Sport Exhaust
#16
The exhaust you just bought is the MP3 muffler, with a pipe designed to fit the P5. This is known as the "Protege 5 Sport Exhaust." It's as quiet and restrictive as the stock one, but with anicer tip. If you want the one I have, you need to order the "Protege 5 Performance Exhaust." It's on backorder until roughly July now, so order soon. I ordered mine November of last year, and just got it a month ago. Look at the above link to see the post I made on it with pics. It explains all you need to know.

The one you order form the dealer is a Mazdaspeed Piece, they just don't know. Everyone assumes it will be a Racing Beat piece becuase of the one that came on the MP3's. But it's not, I Actually think it's better. It doesn't look like a factory piece and it certainly isn't a restrictive. It's a straight through piece where as the factory piece is offset from the inlet to the outlet, but the factory set up lighter than the Mazdaspeed one, don't know why though.
That's the same Part # I have as well.

Racing Beat exhaust
I just put on my new Racing Beat exhaust. I didn't expect Mazda to be selling two exhausts for the same car, but they are. The one I got looks great, but hangs too low- probably because it was made for the lower MP3 rear skirts. I am thinking about getting a body kit, so it doesn't bother me too much. However, because it hangs lower, it looks a little ricey right now.
Since the only exhaust pictures I have found posted of the Mazdaspeed exhaust are from a P5, I wonder if the P5 gets Mazdaspeed and the the sedans get Racing Beat. Anyone know for sure?

Aries,
This should answer your question:
The performance exhaust is listed as the sport exhaust in the accessories brochure, yes, and shows up as the performance exhaust in the computer. The "true" sport exhaust was a last-ditch effort by mazda to have another exhaust available when the P5 came out. It's actually the MP3 muffler, with a shorter pipe to fit the P5. I'm not sure on the part number, or what it's called in the compter, but I think Mazda quit making those anyway. I personally have ever seen two installed on P5's, and I did verify with the owners that it is a direct bolt on, not an MP3 muffler that had been retro-fitted - just to make sure that Mazda did in fact make a "sport" exhaust at one point. In fact, the new performance exhaust may be a total replacement for the old one, hence the naming in the brochure. I'll look into that.

OZProtege:
The sedan gets the mazdaspeed exhaust as well as the Racing Beat exhaust. The difference is the Racing Beat setup is a full cat-back. In case you missed it, the part number for the mazdaspeed exhaust for the sedan is 0000-8M-C09.

Actually, the one I have is a bolt on axle back with Racing Beat etched in the side. It has an oval tip that is angle cut and rolled. It looks quite a bit like pictures I have seen of the MP3 exhaust.
I almost bought the Racing Beat cat-back, but two different people at Racing Beat told me I would only get a 4 hp jump. That wasn't worth $500 for me.

It's the right one.
I the exhaust that I wanted - same as Maxx's "Mazdaspeed" pro5 sport exhaust (or performance exhaust - whatever)
Nelnel - Should be no problem. Looks like that's the correct part number.
The fitment is great (as you can see from Maxx's installation photos) and the exhaust note is awesome. At idle and up to about 4000 rpm you can hear a real low "thrumming" sound. It fades away at higher revs. I've only revved the engine in the garage so I don't know what it will sound like when actually driving it (I'm about to test it out now). I know the Ingen CAI sounds VERY different in the garage than when I'm on the road and letting it all out.
Anyhoo - glad I got mine - was expecting a longer wait so it was a pleasant surprise!

Just got back from the "test drive" The exhaust sounds great. Only complaint is that it sends slight vibrations all the way to the dash - makes the area around the speedometer "buzz".
(Maxx - have you noticed this too?)
I usually cruise around 3000-3500 rpm and this is where the exhaust seems to be the loudest. I wonder if placing some sound-deadening material around the back would help to absorb some of the droning. I could see how it could become annoying on longer trips. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy.
Anyone got any suggestions on how to minimize the drone? Please don't flame me and tell me to take the exhaust off or that I should have never put it on it the first place

Here's my .02...
I just ordered the MazdaSpeed Performance Exhaust for my 02 ES Sedan. It will be here on Friday.
To recap, here are the part numbers:
0000-8M-C08 - Sedan Sport Exhaust (MP3 exhaust)
0000-8M-C09 - Sedan MazdaSpeed Performance Exhaust
0000-8M-C10 - P5 MazdaSpeed Performance Exhaust
I don't know if there is a true P5 Sport Exhaust (MP3), and if so what the part number might be. Ignore the brochures and Mazdastuff web site, they have some of the part numbers incorrect. Make the parts guy look up the number in the computer and it will have the correct name.

The only way I can think of to keep your exhaust where it should be (on your car) is to go to a muffler shop and have them weld the nuts on. Pretty drastic measures. I'm glad I live in a place where I don't have to worry about stuff like this. Are you in such a bad spot?
Too bad you have to wait another month to get yours. Don't worry - it'll be worth it! My MP5 sounds sweeter and sweeter each time I fire her up!
