Did this have anything to do with autocrossing the car? I noticed your sig. What's wrong with it?

Jason Minehart (Jas00x), who is on this forum, lost his tranny a while back due to autocross-induced wheelhop.

I just came from the shop and the guy said that it might be a bad gear. He thinks it was a defect form the factory. Their going to open it up then I know more.

I don't think that autoxing would cause this, but I might be wrong. Now the bad brakes and the bad struts that's from racing.

Again, what exactly is it doing, and does it display the symptoms in all gears or just one?

Jason stripped the gears off his differential. If I remember the story properly, the tranny was making horrid mechanical death noises in all gears, and the car was not driveable.

OK, I know I'm not Pseudo , but my honest recommendation is a G15 tranny swap. Most of my research indicates that the F25 is pretty close to its max torque capacity at the stock output of the 1.8L engine (only 114 lb-ft), and this is backed up by the fact that Mazda used the G15 when it upgraded to the 2.0L, which doesn't put out much more torque. I would expect the F25 to grenade pretty quickly when paired with a turbo engine unless you baby it, but then what's the point of the additional power? Also, if you add an LSD or upgraded clutch, you will stress the tranny even further, increasing the chances of it going BOOM!

My personal opinion is that unless you're competing in a racing class that requires a stock tranny (STS, IT, etc.), a G15 upgrade is mandatory if you propose to increase torque by more than ~20 lb-ft. If you don't upgrade now, you will probably wind up upgrading later. Also, the Pro's stock motor mounts are too soft for the STOCK engine, and using the G15 will allow you to use the upgraded MSP #3 motor mount.

The noise is mechanical but only bad in first, then there is the same noise in secound but not as loud. the rest are fine. What is weird is the noise in first seems to stop after 3000RPMs. I'll know more in a day or two.

ok i cant upgrade to a g series, it doesnt work with my 1.6L, correct me if im wrong..but i KNOW its not a simple swap...biknmans been running the turbo on his f series gearbox for over a year and no new tranny yet....my turbo is going to be for street driving anyway....i guess my best bet is just to ask biknman what he was doing since he was racing his.....motor mount upgrades are a good idea though

Oh, you have a 1.6L. You're right, a G-series swap isn't feasible. I recommend babying it and praying frequently. Of course, you're somewhat helped by the fact that the 1.6L is not as torquey as a 1.8L/2.0L- TORQUE is what breaks transmissions, not horsepower- and you can reduce the chance of breakage by running low boost. Of course, with low boost, performance won't exactly be awe-inspiring.

BTW I would skip the Quaife. Reason? Less stress on the drivetrain means less chance of axle and/or diff breakage. Plus, if the tranny grenades, it won't take a $1,500 Quiafe with it.

Good luck!

thanks for the help guys, but i talked to biknman...as far as torque actually he was pushing 200 lb-ft to the wheels, using the car for racing..said he simply got an ACT 1 Clutch, Indigo Flywheel and ran sunthetic gear oil, plus practiced giving the smoothest shifts possible instead of jamming it into gear... he hasnt had problem one, and he even ran 500 miles with little or no gear oil cuz hi drain plug fell out without him knowing....he said tranny still working great...so I'm a little reassured!! but again thx for the advice guys

Like I said, Jason Minehart sheared the teeth off his differential, and it was probably due to wheelhop. However, the G15 box in the P5 is significantly stronger than the F25. I have heard of other parts of G15's breaking, but I have yet to hear of someone who sheared the teeth off the diff due to wheelhop.

The first thing that the wheelhop will damage is usually the motor mounts. This problem has been discussed in plenty of other threads.
