To answer your question cam gears allow you the ability to adjust the position of your cam profiles in relation to the valves. This in turn opens and closes the valves sooner or later depending on what you need.

Now, not to rip on you or anything but if you don't know what cam gears do then I bet there's a lot of other stuff you dont' know as well!!

RP, you skipped a step and went too far on the explaination. (just giving you a hard time)

Cam gears are used to drive the camshaft. The camshafts do not spin on their own. The cam gears transmit power from the crankshaft to the camshaft. A belt (or chain) is used to connect the crankshaft. The crankshaft and cam gears are set at a 2:1 ratio, so that the camshaft rotates once for every two rotations the of the crankshaft. The cam gears are usually keyed onto the camshaft in order to ensure proper timing.

ADJUSTABLE cam gears, however, give you the ability to adjust your vavle timing in small increments to optimize your engines performance. They are normally an aftermarket item.

oops, I forgot about the purpose of STOCK cam gears. I naturally assumed he meant aftermarket gears...which are adjustable. Thanks for catching that bud.

Sweet!!! RP - You've got psychic powers. He asked one question, but meant to ask another and you were able to answer the question that wasn't asked. But then of course, I too knew he meant adjustable cam gears. I was just giving you a hard time for not reading the question.
