I did a little search and saw that a few of you have had the same clutch chattering problem that I am having. Like yours mine started at 22-23k miles.

What I would like to know is how you got it fixed.
I would like to know if it was covered under your warreny, or if you had to pay how much it cost you.

the clutch is at 12k, so the dealer woulnd't replace it under warranty. I took it in, and the guy calls me the next day and states that because i had a performance intake, that that might cause it.
i'm like, WTF????.
not sure on the cost of it, but if you are good enough with mechanics, or know anyone that does, you might just want to do it yourself. you probably can load a performance clutch and a lighter flywheels as well.

 

If I have to go that way I will, but I can see that there are a lot of people that are having this problem all at the same miles (22-23k). This should prove that it is not a driver or an intake problem! If I can get the names and yr modles along with the milage I am going to send it into Mazda and see what they say. It is a defect not our fault.

 

I guess it helps to be nice and let them know that your not a idiot when it comes to cars. I called two places here and they both said that they would replace it for free. I ask if they would replace the flywheel but he said no. I asked if I bought a new flywheel if they would put it in and he said that they might charge me a small fee (30-40) for doing it. I didn't tell the first place that I had modded the car, but I did tell the other one and he said that none of the mods would have caused it. I told him I knew that but some of the dealers are trying to us that as a reason not to replace it. Then we got to talking about rock crawling and kids! IM IN LIKE FLYNN!

Now I need to find a flywheel, any suggestions? The only one I have seen is on SR motors and they want my right arm for it. I told them I have no girl friend and Im right handed so I will need that arm and hand for a while!! LOL

 

the flywheel should be warrantied as well. that's the cause of the chattering, afterall. mazda will cover the clutch, clutch cover, flywheel, labor and any necessary fluids.

 

I asked and he said no dice on the flywheel, but thats ok cause I really want a lighter one. I miss my quick revin small block.

 

I just had this done recently. These are the parts listed on my invoice:

FS06-16-460 DISC, CLUTC
FS05-16-410A COVER, CLUT
FS01-11-500A WHEEL, FLY
75W90 OIL

Price paid: $0.00

Ask the dealer again and/or call Mazda if you have to. Replacing the clutch only will not fix this issue in the long term.

The dealer replaced mine at 7k miles, they said that the friction plate and throwout bearing were nuked, but im at around 38k miles and it seems to be coming back just as crappy as before....It's really hard to drive the car smoothly most of the time, especially after driving for more than an hour. I'm beginning to wonder if i suck at driving stick, and also beginning to think about getting an invincible aftermarket clutch that will never die even if i do suck

 

this is good info guys, i have an 02 p5 with the same problem. i take it in and they said there is no tsb on this issue, so i couldn't get it fixed. next day i go to the library becuase they have the full AllData database and i couldb't find anything either.
so, my question is, have any with P5 actually have got this installed under warranty, or am i just out of luck.

shall probe into this further.

 

If you cant find a place that will fix it you should make a copy of this and a few other threads and send it to mazda. Ask the question why some can get the problem fix but others cant.
The two dealers I talked to both said that Mazda would rather fix them.

 

i went and got this problem fixed, and i had an intake and full exhaust with no cats and they fixed it for me with no questions asked. i was a little surprised myself, but i guess every dealer is different. i brought the technical service bulletin in that i found and showed that to them also, maybe that helped.

 

I read through the link you provided but it seems to occur most often when the engine is cold. I've been experiencing this problem in 1st gear when the engine is uh.. not cold . The again, my baby is a '02 P5 w/82k miles already.

More than likely I'm looking at having to replace the fly etc since I doubt that I'm still under warranty but please correct me if I'm mistaken. Any ideas/thoughts?

Yea with your miles they wont touch it. You most likly wont need to replace the flywheel but SR motor http://www.srmotorsports.com/protege.htm has a pretty good deal on the hole set. I wont the 9 lbs fly wheel.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I guess the issue of whether or not the clutch is replaced under warranty depends on the dealer. My dealer did replace my clucth, flywheel and all associated parts/fluids under warranty. I'm not sure if there is a formal TSB for this problem, but I was told my the service counter rep that if there was a customer complaint, the dealer was obligated to fix the clutch chatter under warranty. Unfortunately, not all dealers are as helpful as the one I use. Perhaps a phone call / email to Mazda's customer service department may help?

Well just bought a 9lb fly wheel. I asked the service manager at the mazda shop if when they redo the clutch if he would put in a new flywheel and he said yea for about 45.00! So not to shabby! Now I have to set a day to do it.
