A few of my friends have told me cold air intakes are bad, because they can suck up water, and bring it into the engine. I just wanna know what u guys think about this.

I think your friends are idiots and you should only take the advice of professionals.

That being said. I'm ASE certified and it wont happen. Tell your friends they don't know what they're talking about.

 

I didn'y hear they were "bad" so to speak, but I did hear that since some models are underneath near the wheel well and right below the front bumper, they can get water into your engine if you might happen to drive through a puddle for no apparent reason or something to that effect. Any chance that could happen?

 

I have a lot of friends with air intakes. I have to agree with RoddimusPrime. I live here in Florida and it tends to rain here a lot. Ive never heard of an intake sucking up air into the engine. I guess the only time it could happen is if you are DUMB enough to drive through 2-3 feet of water. if your afraid of flooding yer engine you have a couple of options. Get a shorty intake, or get an air bypass valve for yer intake, or DONT DRIVE THROUGH 3 FEET OF WATER.

the amount of horsepower needed to suck water up through your filter, through your MAF into your engine is so great it could really only be accomplished by a Viper or a turbo car.

 

yeah im gonn have to dissagree here guys, from experance, you can suck water up, and hydro lock your engine, its not too hard, now in not saying driving in the rain is going to do it, but if you drive threw a large enouf puddle if you will, it can happen. my very good friend craig, or xlerate, as he used to be, and used to surf here, did infact hydro lock his motor, in his 93 del sol, car was lowered alot, and he went threw what seemed to be a small enouf area of water, and low and behold hydro lock.

 

Yeah, thats what i mean, my friends said that if im driving in the rain, and i run through a puddle, thats when they said u could suck water into the engine, like if its on a highway.

 

if you're THAT scared of hydrolocking your motor, buy the AEM bypass valve. In the event you drive in a typhoon and lower your mazda 13" to where the filter will actually have the ability to be near water deep enough to submerge the filter the bypass will "open up" and air will be drawn in from the engine compartment.

I'm not picking on the guy who asked the question. I'm picking on his friends are overly paranoid about something that is so unlikely to happen. You'd be more likely to wreck your car than to hydrolock a 3rd gen protege with a CAI.

What really bothers me is people spreading misinformation and so forth. Sometimes it's just ok to not know the answer to something. I try to answer stuff as best I can but sometimes I don't know the answer and I just say "I'll have to see about that, or I'll look into that." I don't just go around and tell people something that is a vague generalization....

Hey if you put a turbo or nitrous on your car you're going to blow it up.....

That is a blanket statement saying everyone with a power adder is going to lose their motor. It's not true....possible but not true.

 

it has happened before to a member of this board and he posted pics of his hydrolocked engine...however, he was dumb enough to drive into 2 feet of water ,then gas it real hard to get out....my recommendation...buy a short ram...no chance of hydrolock and not much if any difference from a CAI

 

i got alot of respec for this man right here cause it is true that people spread shyt that they should of looked into before telling other people and i like how he does the research before saying anything about a question and i think everybody should give him respec and alot of props for being one of the few on this forum to be able to help us less knowledgable people on things that we should know about before we persue and do mods that really we shouldnt have done but with his help in areas that he knows best can help us out and im sure i mean this for alot of us when i say thank you for all your hard work that youve done for alot of people on getting our cars the way we want them without making them look stupid or blow up..........thank you with all jokes aside
