Unhappy cold air intake problem

I installed a cold air intake on my 1999 protege 1.6 L. Everything is properly installed including the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR, but since I installed the car "falls on it's face" when I let off the clutch and give it gas. I disconnected the MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR and the problem goes away and the car runs awsome, off coarse the CHECK ENGINE light came on but the battery light also came on. Is there any way to bypass the MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR? Or a cheap easy fix that will keep the check engine light off. And yes, I have already tried disconnection the battery to reset the computer. Please help if you have any information!

Cool

I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!
The factory MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR does not go deep enough into the intake tube, so I put in a restricter plate that diverts the air into the sensor. The restricter plate, custom made by me, doesn't "restrict" the airflow it just diverts it towards the sensor. Thanks for not helping.

Thanks for not helping? You didnt even say what kind of intake you have. You obviously need some help if you wanted to bypass the MAF, or thought your car ran better with it disconnected. I'm surprised it ran at all. The MAF tells your engine how much fuel to deliver based on the amount of incoming air. It is VERY sensitive to turbulence. how did you divert air INSIDE the intake?? weld a plate? if it come's loose and goes thru your intake tube you are asking for big trouble. think about what a piece of metal or plastic sucked into your intake manifold would do...shudder!

I wanted to see a pic of your mod, not the car.

I will need to see this mod as well. I have just got a free intake from a Honda SI (a long tube with a monsterflow filter) and I'm going to make a homemade sensor mount. I don't anticipate any problems but I would like to see your work.

If the MAF screen is there I would think there should be no problem. Some people yank them out thinking you get more air flow, but the sensor needs that laminar flow. Without it the sensor output is all over the place. It may run good sometimes and terrible others, because the temperature at the sensor is all over the place.
