Coolant/Anti-Freeze?
I was curious which Coolant would be good for the protege. Just to let you know I have a Gen3 DX 2k2. Before I was going to buy what I think would be Best, I was interested in ya'll advice. Maybe ya'll can help me out with some tips.

I'm not sure how much the brand matters, just don't mix colors.
GM cars come with Dexcool, which is red. Supposedly it has a longer life than the green stuff, which is what most cars use. Bad things happen if you mix them even a little bit, so don't put the red stuff in hoping for longer life, even if you have drained the green stuff out first.

WAIT!!!
Wait!! Colors do matter. Prestone is the green antifreeze i believe. DON'T use the green coolant. It eats away at your engines inards and can/will cause you problems in the future. Anything Red or Clear is good. Prestone may make a better coolant now as its been a while since I've actually used prestone, but just make sure its either Clear or Red.

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT use the clear/red stuff on your Proteges
our radiators are DESIGNED to use the green stuff ONLY.
The following is a DIRECT QUOTE of what the workshop service manual says regarding coolant:
FYI, alcohol/methanol coolants are the red/clear ones.
the green stuff is ethylene-glycol.
PLEASE follow instructions!!!

CAUTION
The engine has aluminum parts that can be damaged by alcohol or methanol antifreeze. Do not use alcohol or methanol in the cooling system. Use only ethylene-glycol-based coolant.

Use prestone or peak these are the best brands for our cars.
Also, use Water Wetter or Purple ICE so you can run more watter in your mix.
Water disipates heat faster than coolant, coolant just won't freeze.

I don't put to much trust in my dealers cause they like to mislead me without of information. I caught them trying to put 5w-20 oil in my engine and then they tried to argue with me by saying that it is in the book when that **** wasn't even listed in my manual!!!

In general, use OEM coolant for any car. In my Maxima, I use Nissan coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. In my Honda, I use Honda coolant. In my Astro, I use Dex-cool. Both Chrysler and Toyota have proprietary coolants. Do not mix coolants. Here's the rub, there is no OEM Mazda coolant.
I have heard that the seals on Japanese car water pumps wear out quicker with a coolant that relies on silicates for cooling system corrosion protection. Both the Nissan and Honda coolants specifically state that they contain no silicates, nor borates which eat aluminum.
Honda and Nissan coolants are exactly the same color. They are the same color as the coolant which came OEM in both my Mazdas. I use Nissan coolant in my Mazdas.
