EGR valve

Sup ya'll. My CEL is on and Meineke tells me its my EGR valve and I needa spend $300 on it to replace it. I said that. I heard that most of the time this "egr valve" wherever it is can just simply be cleaned. ANy details and ideas please? I would GREATLY appreciate it sine I cant buy my kit unles my engine is fixed.

Pull it off and look at it. Buy a new gasket first, and be careful stripping the old one off if it is stuck. If you can see a lot of carbon built up in it then clean it out, other issues can look like a stuck EGR valve.

Also check the vacum line that goes in the manifold next to the EGR valve I seen many valves replace by shops when this port was blocked so the PCM couldn't tell the vavle was working.

I have a 99 lx 1.6L . My EGR was throwing a code so I took it off and there was alot of carbon **** in there. I sprayed it with B-12 and let soak and sprayed more. I used a dermmel with the plastic brush head and cleaned it out really good. Then I used compressed air to blow it out. I did that about 30,000 miles back and have had no problems..........Duncan

Look at the intake MANIFOLD on the driver side. Its gonna be almost at the bottom, It has 2 bolts holding it on. The top of it is a dark grayish plastic witha electric connection plugged in. The main body is rough metal and it is about 4 inches long. Sorry. no pics here.............Duncan

you dont need to pull your egr valve off pull your throtle body off and you will see a small hole that supplys vaccuum to your egr valve find the valve and pull off the vaccuum hose and clean it out that is why your engine light came on just clean that out with carb cleaner and a coat hanger.
