Engine pinging...

Hey everyone wat up, I'm new here. I have an '01 Protege ES, 5spd. My engine started pinging recently due to very hot weather outside, over 90's. It does it around 3k rpm when I step hard on it. It doesnt ping in the morning when its cooler. So what causes this? I thought they had knock sensors??? What can go wrong? Can timing be adjusted and how? I put in a different intake filter a few weeks ago, as you will see in the pic below, so im thinking that may have something to do with it since its getting more air and maybe not enough fuel? But the computer should compensate right? I heard that Seafoam will clean out an engine pretty good... I dont wanna start using premium gas. The car has 139k miles on it.

Also, how can I reset the ECU?

Thanks lots...

I don't think your engine will ping because of a filter change...you have the 1.8L?
However, you definitely need to reset the ECU.
Remove the neg battery terminal, hold the brake pedal down for about 10 seconds.
That'll do it. Drive the car the way you plan on driving normally.
Have you changed your plugs lately?

Cool, thanks. I have the 2.0. Are there knock sensors? And isnt the timing adjusted automatically thru the computer?
Thanks...

Well I reset the ECU and it didnt really help. Altho now it doesnt ping as often, so that helped a bit.
I think I'm gonna try the Seafoam thru the brake booster hose and see if that helps. And maybe add some octane boosters in the gas tank. Should I adjust timing? How?

Thanks.

Just put a higher grade of gas. Saving that little bit of money won't help you if you have to pull your dead engine out because you were too cheap to get better gas.

Well ya but the car isnt made for higher grade, its not a sports or luxury car its just a small cheap economy car. So it must be something else the matter with the dang thing. I just got a tank full of Shell gas this morning so i'll see how that does.

get a proper intake that places that IAT properly. I bet that + SRI sucking hot air + hot weather = pinging....also possibly some dirty injectors....

I doubt the IAT is OK...it looks like you just have in shoved inside the filter, hanging there.

SRI is short ram intake....you are sucking hot engine bay air...hot air is less dense, less dense air=less power...I doubt you are getting ANY increase from that intake ...Just a lot of noise so you think it works

No the IAT is in the rubber black part that goes into the filter inbetween the 2 clamps, sticking out on the right side of the intake. I made a hole in for it and everything.

If your car is pinging, something is probably wrong with it. You are right LoL, it isn't a sports car or anything, so I have a feeling it doesn't have much timing advance. You should make sure that your MAF is clean and that the IAT is clean. Then clean out your injectors, and make sure your plugs are good as well.

If it still does it, I don't know whats wrong.
