Engine Upgrade vs. Turbo in a P5
Well this is the thing, I know alot of you guys want more speed/HP outta your cars, and I especially do in my Protege5. Id really like to get her up to 180hp minimum. So my question was, which would be the best reliable and most cost effective way to up the power in her. I have been looking into doing a whole engine swap (if you know of any good companies, please post links) and turbo/intercooler setups and am still unsure.
So what do you guys think?

Where are you located???? Corksport can get you the engine you are looking for. Not really sure if they install them though. Someone else may be helpful on that though. It would probably be cheaper to get the cams, change the ecu and get the higher compressions pistons. Then you basically have the FS ZE engine.

but anyway if anyone has more info, thanks in advance

Also does anyone know how much that would cost? and where i could get everything? Sorry to sound stupid, but well you know.

Does a 3rd gen 1.8, 2.0 and jspec 2.0 have the same block???
So the jspec pistons will fit 1.8 and 2.0?
What these jspec pistons will do? Higher the compression? How much Hp-s these add?
Whats the difference between mazdaspeed pistons and jpsec ones?
What would be better - to get the cams or pistons? As i have understand the jspec exhaust cam isnt very good .. that maeby to get the intake cam and pistons?
thank you for answering

As I understood it the JSPEC pistons are a higher compression. over 10 I believe. I am not sure about the mazdaspeed cams, but they are probably a higher compressoin as well. I would get the cams because they would be much cheaper to install. Get the JSPEC intake and the mazda mototrsport exhaust cam if you don't like JSPEC exhaust cam. I believe if you get the cams, exhaust and the ecu you would almost have the JSPEC engine. I am not sure of anyone in Nebraska that can help....sorry.

If I understand what you are saying correctly, I think you've got it backwards. The 1.8L 'FP' engine in the '99-'00 Protege has the same block as the 2.0L 'FS' engine in the '01+ Protege and the Jspec 2.0L 'FS-ZE' engine. The stroke was changed between the 1.8L and 2.0L engines, but the bore is the same between all three engines. The pistons are likely the same between the US model 1.8L and 2.0L engines. The FS-ZE pistons are 10.5:1 compression and the Mazdaspeed pistons are slightly higher at 10.7:1. The pistons are more difficult to install than the cams, but would provide a noticable power increase across the entire RPM range. The intake cam adds power but moves the power up higher in the RPM range by about 400 to 500 RPM. The Jspec exhaust cam, or FS-ZE exhaust cam is the same profile as the US protege engines and will not add any power. The MazdaSpeed exhaust cam is a different profile, and may add a very small amount of power.

The FS block has been offered in both 1.8L and 2.0L versions. In north america, the 1.8L was used as the top of the line engine in 1999 & 2000 (the 1.6L remained in lower models). Starting in 2001, the 2.0L was substituted for the 1.8L, and for 2002, all US models have the 2.0L, while Canada still has the 1.6L for some lower models (non LX & ES).
The pistons will be different, as the stroke wasn't changed, just the bore.
