exhaust or intake to change sound

hi all, I need some advice about changing the sound of my car. as you can tell from the subject I'm thinking of an exhaust or an intake to add to my car. I'm wondering what changes each make to the sound of the car. I've been in a friend's car with an intake and i noticed it sounded a little throatier than normal engines, what diffferences would a mazdaspeed exhaust make. I heard a mazdaspeed start once and loved the quiet sound of the exhaust at idle but didn't hear it at regular speeds, any input would be greatly appreciated

The intake will give a nicer deep buzz under acceleration, and the exhaust will give a deeper note all around. Just stay away from those brappy bumblebee exhausts - they're more annoying than useful.

Even the simple removal of the plastic intake resonator will give a throatier acceleration note.

The other nice thing is that you'll gain a few HP with the mods, and your fuel economy might even go up. Mine did (80 km extra per tank on average).

Can't go wrong on this one, 78.

hi again, you say that a muffler will give a deeper sound all around, how about a highway speeds? I find at around 100 km/h the engine is a bit buzzy, not really annoying but it would be nice if it sounded a bit deeper, would the muffler change this? also you mention removing the plastic intake resonator, how is this done, I haven't heard of annoying doing this on a protege. is this the kind of thing that would give you a CEL? thanks again

I just ordered the Mazdaspeed exhaust for my ES the other day. Should have it installed by Thursday night if it shows up on time. I'll let you know how it sounds. I've read that the Mazdaspeed exhaust is fairly loud, and I've also read that it wasn't! I guess it's a matter of personal taste, but I'll try to be as objective as possible!

Hey ib

Installed the exhaust last night. It's not loud at all--very mellow with a bit of a lower tone. At idle and at less than 3k
it's barely noticeable. It cranks in at @ 3500 & up--makes me wanna never shift!
However , even at 5000+ it's not obnoxious or ricey, it's suble. I like the sound.
There was a thread a while back (I want to look for it) about whether the Mazdaspeed exhaust was Borla or Racing Beat--this one very clearly in large letters is marked Racing Beat (who also make a cat-back for our cars).
Hope this helps. Do you have the sedan or a P5?

hi again, I have a lx sedan. I ask about the exhaust because I'm not sure if i want to change my car for a 3 or change some things on my car, exhaust being number 1 thing I would change. Now that you tell me it sounds good it makes me decision even harder!

So ib,
I found the thread I was looking for. Funny thing, it was actually started by you last April!
Anyway, the thing doesn't say Mazda on it anywhere. Definitely Racing Beat, not Bosal, either.

another thing you can do is modify the stock intake. i did this along with removing the MAF screen after reading a thread on another forum. its still quiet, but a little more responsive. best of all its free. heres the thread

Hey phantom
Just curious if you know--since I just have the axle-back Racing Beat, can you get the extra piping separately or is it a larger
diameter ?
I guess I could just check the website, but' I'm being lazy tonite...

hmmm...that i don't know (and i'm lazy too) but we did have to fabricate a piece from the header to the exhaust to get everything to work

Where can you get RacingBeat exhausts from? Besides racingbeat.com?
