Grinding Second

Just a hair over 5000 miles and my transmission is acting up. The problem is intermittant. Every now and then when shifting to second, either up or down, I can't get the shifter to go into second. I'm not about to force it, so I let it fall back t neutral and try second again. I'll repeat this until it goes. Several times now, with the clutch to the floor, it will sometimes grind as it goes in. What's the problem here? Synchros? I'm a bit perturbed that this is happening to a brand new car. I'll be taking it in come Monday, but I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions.

I would say to take it in and let the dealer know about it. I don't think you're alone on this one, but maybe yours is bit more serious than others around here. Mine occassionally grinds slightly going into second, and is hesitant to go into 2nd usually only when cold. For me anyway, it hasn't refused to go into gear if I give it enough time.

Please let us know what your dealer says about this.

Does it seem to be related to temperature?

Mazda trannies (both FWD and RWD) have a reputation for being stubborn when they're cold, so this sort of problem often arises in the winter. Redline tranny fluid helps a LOT.

Come to think of it, it seems like it may only happen within the first few miles after starting, but I haven't paid that much attention to it.

I do plan on taking it to the dealer eventually, but like i said it's very intermittant, and as soon as i take it to them, all the problems will dissappear. I haven't had any problems with it yet today.

Thanks for all of the responses, guys.

Its probably just the common grind when cold. I have never owned a FWD car that didn't do this in the winter when just started. The problem I guess is all of the gear oil settles to the bottom of the box and is a little thicker when cold. The start up in nuetral doesn't allow enough of it to coat everything before you start moving and the shift to second is fairly notchy and sometimes makes a little grinding noise/hard to shift. If it really worries you take it to your dealer, but I will bet they will tell you that it is just do to cold weather and that it is normal.

I have this issue with my car...800 mi on it. I took it to the dealer already, but by the time I got there everything was warm enough where it wouldn't do it. So they kept it for the day and say when they drove it later on they felt it. As other people have said, they said its a common thing when the car is cold and there is nothing to do about it. They did say IF there was something wrong, and they didn't think there was, it would be the synchro. But, in their opinion, synchro are usually either good or bad...not just a little messed up.
