Is it better to use the Stock rubber tube , that came with the car going into the engine or just any after market one , make it fit custom .

Dont think that rubber tube is that great!

I have this sound with my Ractive short ram intake as well. I didn't know what it was at first, but I figured it out after.

Btw, in regards resetting the computer (ie: disconnecting the battery)... I never did this when I installed my intake. I just turned on my car, and left it to idle for around 10-15 minutes.

I haven't had any problems, but would I notice any differences by disconnecting the battery?

you would notice that all your settings are gone even your trip millage, and HU settings other than that no, but when you reset you have to let your car idle for about 15 mins.

i have a question for some of you techs, you know the air temp sensor right next to your MAF sensor on the stock air box? what would happen to your engine if that sensor was broken? would this affect when the engine cooling fans turn on and off?

the stock rubber tube works just fine...and i like it because its flexible and allowed me to adjust fitment of my homemade CAI perfectly....btw those metal tube intakes are natural heat conductors,so you are heating that "cold air" your bringing in.... also I never had one CEL with mine notta one!

homemade CAI

$250 CAI

Injen makes a Racing Division CAI for the 1.8L. My car was the prototype vehicle. It is not in any way like the 1.6L. Remember, the 1.8L and 2.0L are nearly identical except for displacement (FP-DE and FS-DE). The 1.6L is a completely different engine (ZM-DE). Contact Injen for the time-frame on the 1.8L CAI. I have had wonderful results with my CAI... from the awesome sounds to the fairly good gains to the wonderful throttle response. Here's some pics: If these fail to load, go to the bottom of http://www.caliprotegemeet.1hwy.com/mycar.html

The stock intake... how restrictive!

The new, beautiful, and awesome Injen Racing Division CAI!

Gains: 5.0hp and 6.2ft-lbs...

Injen installed my CAI, but I will try to give you some instruction based on what they told me they did...

Look at the picture of my Injen CAI two posts up. The 1.8L and 2.0L intakes are, for all practical purposes, identical. You will have to move the coolant resevoir to the radiator bracket using it's top mount. There is no place to bolt the bottom mount unless you want to fabricate a bracket (mine isn't bolted at the bottom and it has not been a problem). You will also have to move the purge solenoid valve which is mounted on top of the stock intake just before the throttle body. Being very careful with the vacuum lines, move this to the wiring bracket that sits on top of the intake manifold.

When you remove the stock intake, you must keep the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor. The MAF sensor is the large square sensor between the filter box and throttle body. The IAT sensor is the small sensor that fits into the back of the filter box. The MAF will fit between the two pipes connected via the rubber hose sections. The IAT will fit into the small predrilled hole on the pipe that goes down into the fender (a bracket is welded to this pipe).

The pipe with the smaller pipe welded to it attaches to the throttle body via the curved hose section. The thin, long hose attaches to this pipe's smaller pipe and fits onto the valve cover. The other section of pipe fits partially into the large hole that leads into the fender. The welded bracket is used to secure that pipe with the rubber mount that is provided.

The last thing to do is put on the cone filter. To do this, you must turn your wheels all the way to the right. Unscrew the splash panel behind the fender, inside the wheel well. From here, you should be able to fit the filter on.

Sorry for the crude directions. It shouldn't be that hard. Maybe someone here that installed the intake could give you better pointers. Otherwise, I'm sure Injen can e-mail or fax you instructions. Good luck!

if you will go to Protege5Online.com and go to their "TECH" section there is a very good set of instructions there....and they include pictures as well.....the instructions there are better than the ones that come with the kit.

Hmm...I installed my Injen Intake for the ZM 1.6 engine yesterday. I forgot to disconnect my negatize battery cable...whoops. Maybe I should do that now to reset the ECU???

The only thing that has concerned me about this intake is around 40-50MPH, in 4th gear after the torque converter locks down, I get this slight jerking from the car. It goes away once I speed up a little bit. Maybe I need to reset my ECU and make sure my MAF sensor is installed correctly??? It doesn't bother me too much, hardly noticeable.

my injen does that same jerking. i've tried several ways to try and fix it, but nothing has worked yet. mines an automatic and it also does it a little in 2nd, but not as bad. i attribute to possible gusts into the maf, but don't know for sure.

totally off topic, but i was thinking the other day that if you want a "real" CAI, cut a hole through the firewall and run the tube into the cabin of the car. maybe run an a/c vent to it. just a thought though.
Does your intake by any chance have the splash guard on it like mine? Just trying to figure this thing out. I was driving home tonight from work and it was jerking pretty damn bad...

no, mine does not have a splash guard. why'd you get one? did you remove the bottom plastic piece? i already had a hole in the bumper from my ram air, so i had to put a deflector behind the bumpercover so that rain would shoot to the bottom of the fender well, but the CAI would still get "cold" air. that and i didn't feel like patching the hole with fiberglass. i'll probably call injen today if i get a chance. have you noticed that the jerking is worse with the A/C on? i "think" mine does, but i may be feeling things. but it is definitely a problem that is starting to make mad.
I got one because down here in FL it rains quite a bit. I guess I'm a little too paranoid about sucking water up into the engine. Also, at my school, the entrance to the student parking lot is literally covered in water up to your door sills when it rains for more than 20 minutes.

I don't know about the A/C either. I keep thinking it does it worse when it is on, but it also does it when it is off too. The only thing I could think of that is making it jerk like that is not enough air getting to the engine, or maybe the MAF isn't reading the air properly.
